The Remy Fund for Pets and Animal Services, managed by the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham, is currently accepting applications for its 2025 grant cycle. This special fund was established in 2010 by Birmingham philanthropist Ken Jackson in memory of his dog, Remy, and has since awarded nearly $650,000 in grants to nonprofit organizations supporting companion animal services. The 2025 application deadline is April 30, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. Central Time.
This funding opportunity supports nonprofit organizations whose missions or programs focus on traditional companion animals—dogs, cats, and horses. Eligible organizations must be classified as public charities under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and be based in one or more of the following Alabama counties: Jefferson, Shelby, St. Clair, Blount, and Walker.
Grants typically range from $2,000 to $10,000. While general organizational support requests are accepted, preference is given to project-specific proposals that demonstrate clear goals and measurable outcomes. Capital projects are explicitly ineligible. Priority areas for funding include animal rescue and shelter programs, spay/neuter services, animal-assisted therapy involving companion animals, and education or advocacy promoting humane treatment of pets.
Applications undergo a thorough evaluation process led by the Remy Fund Grant Committee. The committee, composed of experienced professionals and community leaders, conducts both in-person and virtual site visits to assess applicants’ capacity and alignment with the fund’s priorities.
Questions about the application process may be directed to Meg Ford at mford@cfbham.org or by calling 205-327-3807. Completed applications must be submitted through the Community Foundation’s online portal by the stated deadline.
