Horizons Enrichment Grant
This grant provides funding to individual artists in Saline County, Kansas, for professional and artistic development projects that address immediate or unforeseen needs.
The Horizons Enrichment Grant is administered by Salina Arts & Humanities, a department of the City of Salina, Kansas. This grant program is part of the broader Horizons Grants Program, which is partially funded through donations from the Horizons donors group. The purpose of the Enrichment Grant is to support individual artists residing in Saline County by offering funding for professional and artistic development projects. This funding is designed for immediate or unforeseen needs that could not be planned for during the organization’s regular grant cycle. The program emphasizes timely support and clear rationale for why an applicant missed the standard grant window. The funding scope of the Horizons Enrichment Grant includes a maximum award of $1000 per applicant for eligible project categories. These categories include presentation of new work (including production, supplies, and venue rental), study and training (such as workshops, master classes, and mentorship programs), artistic promotion (e.g., creation of portfolios or demonstration recordings), acquisition of equipment and resources related to an applicant’s art practice, and travel associated with research or attendance at visual or performing arts events. The grant does not support general operating costs, and funds may only be used for purposes explicitly described in the approved application. Any deviation from the proposed project or budget requires prior written approval from Salina Arts & Humanities. Applicants must be individual artists who have resided in Saline County, Kansas for at least one year prior to the application deadline. Previous recipients must wait a full calendar year before applying again. Applications are accepted annually between February 1 and November 15, but must be submitted at least four weeks before the proposed project start date. First-time applicants are required to apply at least six weeks in advance. Final reports must be submitted no later than December 15, 2025. Applicants are encouraged to check with Salina Arts & Humanities staff before beginning the application, especially late in the year, to confirm that funding is still available. Grants are not awarded between November 16 and January 31 for budgetary reasons. Applicants begin the process by notifying the Salina Arts & Humanities staff of their intent to apply. This triggers a brief informal meeting to discuss application requirements. The application itself can be submitted via an online form at salinaarts.com or by requesting a PDF or paper version. Required supporting materials include a resume or bio, a detailed project budget, one letter of recommendation from a professional in the arts familiar with the applicant’s work, a sample of related work, documentation about any study opportunities (e.g., brochures or course descriptions), and promotional materials from previous activities if available. The grant selection process prioritizes applicants who show a commitment to artistic growth and excellence. Proposals are reviewed based on the artistic quality of submitted work samples, clarity and strength of project descriptions, the level and scope of artistic activity, and the seriousness of artistic investigation. Funding decisions are ratified within 14 days of submission. Successful applicants receive 90% of the grant upon signing an agreement. A final 10% is distributed after submission and approval of a final report, due within 30 days of project completion. Grantees must retain financial records for three years and are subject to audit by Salina Arts & Humanities. Grant recipients may also be invited to participate in donor-related activities such as private showings or performances, with additional associated costs covered by the program. The program enforces compliance with all federal non-discrimination laws, including Title IV, Title IX, and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.
