The Good Roots Grant program provides financial support to cities, towns, and communities in Alabama to enhance local green spaces by planting trees and supporting beautification efforts. This initiative, which is backed by the Alabama Power Foundation and its partners, aims to help maintain a vibrant and attractive environment, fostering a sense of community pride. Grants are awarded to projects that actively involve the community and contribute to improving the quality of life and environmental standards across the state.
Eligible applicants for the Good Roots Grant include local governments, educational institutions, city and county school systems, universities, and 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations. The grants are provided to organizations, not individuals, and all recipient organizations must hold tax-exempt status under IRS regulations. In addition, these organizations must not discriminate based on race, color, creed, gender, nationality, or ethnic origin. Each grant is capped at $1,000.
The funding can be used for tree-planting projects that follow the guidelines set by the International Society of Arboriculture or the National Arbor Day Foundation, ensuring best practices for the health and long-term care of the trees. The involvement of local government or a nonprofit representative is required, as a signed grant agreement must be submitted by all recipients.
The selection process for the grants is competitive, with a committee reviewing applications based on several factors, including the potential environmental benefit to the community, project viability, the level of local leadership and volunteer involvement, and the soundness of the project’s financial plan. Special consideration is given to projects that demonstrate strong community support and a clear plan for the long-term care of the planted trees.
