Grant Description

The Farm Viability Institute (FVI) 2026 Grant Program, managed by the New York Farm Viability Institute (NYFVI), supports agricultural research and education initiatives designed to enhance the economic viability of farms throughout New York State. The FVI grant program is a cornerstone of NYFVI's mission to facilitate the creation and dissemination of knowledge that enables NY farmers to adapt to changing agricultural landscapes through sound science and practical outreach. Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to working with New York State’s agricultural community and to delivering measurable economic benefits at the farm level. Eligible applicants include for-profit and nonprofit organizations such as research institutions, ag educators, technical assistance providers, membership groups, and businesses that can effectively manage a reimbursable grant. Projects must take place in New York State, serve New York’s farmers, and clearly align with one or more of NYFVI’s five strategic outcomes: improving farm practices, fostering innovation, incubating ideas, enhancing market routes, or developing human capital. Applications must identify specific indicators and performance targets related to these outcomes, and measurement and reporting on those outcomes are mandatory throughout the project period. Each grant may request between $15,000 and $125,000, and funded projects must begin between April 1, 2026 and January 1, 2027. The maximum project duration is two years. Funding decisions will be announced in mid-February 2026, with contracts expected to be finalized by mid-March. Selected projects will be reimbursed quarterly following submission of progress reports and documentation, with 10% of the award withheld until the final report is approved. The grant is funded through New York State appropriations for FY 2024–2025. The application process takes place on NYFVI’s newer online grant management platform, which includes branching questions and SMART goal integration. Applicants are strongly encouraged to review strategic outcome indicators in advance and to participate in informational webinars. A recorded session is available for review. While all outcomes are valued, proposals that emphasize adoption of beneficial farm practices and demonstrate economic relevance to producers will receive particular attention. Strong proposals will also reflect producer input, stakeholder engagement, and alignment with statewide agricultural priorities. The application period opened on September 3, 2025, and closes on October 24, 2025, at 11:59 PM. Staff comments will be issued on November 3, and revised proposals are due by November 17. Applications are evaluated by NYFVI staff for completeness, followed by farmer-led review panels, and final selection by the NYFVI board. Proposals are scored across categories including project justification, market understanding, team qualifications, outreach, evaluation methods, and budget value. All funded projects must publicly acknowledge NYFVI as a sponsor in related materials and presentations. For additional questions, applicants are advised to contact FVI Grant Coordinator Brooke Johnston at bjohnston@nyfvi.org.
