NIH Research Project Grant (Parent R01 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)

The National Institutes of Health invites applications for its Research Project Grant (Parent R01 Clinical Trial Not Allowed), which supports discrete, specified, and circumscribed research projects in areas aligned with the missions of participating NIH Institutes and Centers. Applications may be assigned to multiple Institutes or Centers if they align with related research interests. Eligible applicants include higher education institutions, nonprofits, for-profit organizations, small businesses, local and state governments, Native American tribal organizations, and foreign institutions. Foreign components of U.S. organizations are also eligible to apply. Individuals with the skills, knowledge, and resources necessary to conduct the proposed research are encouraged to develop an application. This funding opportunity does not require cost sharing. Application budgets are not capped but must reflect the actual needs of the proposed project. The maximum project period is five years. The number of awards is contingent upon NIH appropriations and the submission of meritorious applications. Standard NIH due dates apply for both non-AIDS and AIDS-related applications. All applications are due by 5:00 PM local time of the applicant organization. Applicants requesting $500,000 or more in direct costs in any single year must contact a relevant scientific/research staff member at least six weeks prior to submission. Applications will undergo a rigorous peer review process based on significance, investigator expertise, innovation, approach, and scientific environment. Additional review considerations include protections for human subjects, inclusion of women, minorities, and individuals across the lifespan, and the use of vertebrate animals. The review will result in a written critique and an overall impact score reflecting the project’s potential to advance the research field. Final funding decisions will consider scientific merit, availability of funds, and program priorities. Applicants must adhere to all instructions in the SF424 (R&R) Application Guide, including new requirements related to the NIH Policy for Data Management and Sharing for submissions due on or after January 25, 2023. Registrations with DUNS, SAM, eRA Commons, and Grants.gov must be completed in advance, as they can take up to six weeks. Submissions are made electronically through NIH ASSIST, Grants.gov Workspace, or an institutional system-to-system solution. Successful applicants will receive a Notice of Award, and all funded projects will be subject to the terms and conditions outlined in the NIH Grants Policy Statement. Awardees must comply with federal civil rights laws and other administrative and national policy requirements. Institutions must ensure the safety of participants, proper oversight through Institutional Review Boards, and adherence to NIH guidelines on data sharing and reporting requirements.
