2025 Reusable Foodware Cafeteria Grants
This grant provides funding to schools, nonprofits, and institutions in Alameda County to replace single-use foodware with reusable alternatives in their dining facilities, promoting sustainability and waste reduction.
The Reusable Foodware Cafeteria Grants, offered by StopWaste, support innovative projects aimed at replacing single-use disposable foodware with reusable alternatives in closed-environment dining facilities in Alameda County. These grants prioritize initiatives that implement reusable foodware systems in controlled settings, such as school cafeterias, corporate campuses, hospitals, and other large institutions where meals are served in high volumes. By funding the transition to reusable foodware, the program aims to reduce waste, encourage sustainable practices, and support infrastructure improvements like dishwashing services and bulk condiment dispensers. The purpose of this grant is to facilitate the shift from disposable to reusable foodware in institutional dining environments where reusables can be effectively managed, washed, and redistributed. Eligible applicants include school districts, public and private schools, nonprofits, businesses, and institutions. Additionally, reusable foodware vendors and service providers may apply, provided they have a specific project and location identified, along with letters of support from relevant stakeholders. Funding for this program ranges from $25,000 to $50,000 per project, with a total grant pool of $200,000 available for this cycle. Eligible expenses include purchasing reusable trays, bowls, cups, and utensils, acquiring or upgrading dishwashing equipment, installing bulk milk dispensers and condiment stations, and contracting dishwashing services for locations where installing a dishwasher is not feasible. Projects must take place in Alameda County and serve at least 150 meals per day to be eligible. Open-system reusable foodware projects, such as takeout or grab-and-go settings, are not eligible for funding. Applications for this grant must be submitted by February 24, 2025, with awards anticipated to be announced on April 18, 2025. If funds remain after the initial award cycle, additional applications may be accepted on a rolling basis. StopWaste encourages applicants to engage with their team before applying to receive guidance on project design, vendor selection, and cost estimation. This early engagement can enhance the likelihood of receiving funding. Evaluation criteria for the grant include the feasibility and sustainability of the proposed project, alignment with grant priorities, and the potential to reduce waste through a successful transition to reusable foodware. Priority will be given to innovative and scalable approaches that can serve as models for other institutions. Additionally, projects must demonstrate clear planning for implementation, including logistics for dishware collection, washing, and redistribution. Applicants are encouraged to explore previously funded projects for inspiration and to access resources provided by StopWaste to assist in project planning.
