The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is accepting applications for the CHIPS AI/AE for Rapid, Industry-informed Sustainable Semiconductor Materials and Processes (CARISSMA) Competition. This program supports research and development efforts to enhance the sustainability of semiconductor materials and processes through artificial intelligence-powered autonomous experimentation (AI/AE). It seeks to foster collaboration between industry and universities to accelerate the discovery, design, synthesis, and adoption of advanced materials while addressing workforce development in semiconductor manufacturing.
Awards will focus on projects that contribute to the long-term viability of domestic semiconductor manufacturing, aligning with technological, economic, and sustainability goals. Supported activities include research, education, workforce training, and other initiatives critical to advancing industry standards.
Eligible applicants include domestic accredited institutions of higher education and organizations managing consortia of such institutions. Applicants must be incorporated and have their principal place of business in the United States or U.S. territories. Eligible subrecipients include accredited higher education institutions, for-profit and nonprofit organizations, government entities, Federally Funded Research and Development Centers, and foreign partners. Vendors providing goods or services are not considered subrecipients.
Applicants are limited to one concept paper submission. If invited, they may submit one full application. The application deadline is January 13, 2025, with the anticipated number of awards set at 10. Funding is contingent on availability, and no cost-sharing or matching is required.
