Grant Description

The Investing in the Artist Grant for Arts Organizations is a funding initiative from the City of Santa Ana's Arts & Culture Office designed to support local arts organizations and cooperatives. The program emphasizes community-centered storytelling under the theme "Stories That Unite Us in Santa Ana," honoring the city’s diverse cultural history through creative expression. The grant seeks to catalyze impactful artistic projects that strengthen community ties and reflect the shared experiences of Santa Ana’s residents. Grantees are expected to engage community members in meaningful participation, creating opportunities for collaborative storytelling through visual arts, music, performance, digital media, writing, and other artistic disciplines. Eligible applicants must be arts-focused organizations or cooperatives based in or serving Santa Ana communities. Requirements include having a Santa Ana business license or city approval to operate, general liability insurance naming the City as an additional insured, and either an active 501(c)(3) status or recognition as an eligible cooperative under city standards. Cooperatives are specifically defined by democratic governance and member-ownership principles. Organizations currently engaged in litigation with the city, with unresolved code violations, or with outstanding financial obligations to the city are ineligible. Additionally, organizations that have withdrawn or failed to complete past projects or reporting requirements are disqualified from applying for two years. The grant awards up to $20,000 in reimbursable funds per organization. The funding period is 12 months, during which recipients must submit both interim and final reports detailing outcomes, expenditures, and supporting documentation. Funds are disbursed in two payments: one at the project’s commencement and the second 60 days following successful final report submission. Any uncompleted projects by the grant cycle’s end must return all funds, and the organization will be barred from reapplying for two years. Applications must be submitted via Submittable by March 23, 2026, at 11:59 PM. Attendance at one of two mandatory virtual information sessions—scheduled for March 12 and March 17—is required to be eligible. The application package includes a cover sheet, narrative proposal, mission statement, staff and board list, detailed line-item budget, project timeline, original artwork or activity schedule, and at least two letters of community support. Additionally, applicants must disclose if permits or site access permissions are needed and provide proof if proposing public installations. Proposals are reviewed by a peer panel with expertise in the arts and familiarity with Orange County’s cultural landscape. Applications are scored based on artistic merit and theme relevance (40%), organizational readiness (25%), community impact (25%), and demonstrated need (10%). Bonus points are awarded for applicants living or working in Santa Ana, while deductions are made for prior non-compliance. Final recommendations are made by the Arts & Culture Commission in April 2026, with award notifications expected in June or July 2026. While projects may be modest in scope, they must directly contribute to the organization’s mission and positively affect Santa Ana’s cultural ecosystem. Administrative and general operating costs, projects outside city boundaries, and politically or religiously driven initiatives are not eligible for funding. The City encourages partnerships and efforts that activate underserved neighborhoods, promoting an inclusive and economically vibrant arts environment. For more information, applicants may contact the Arts & Culture Office via email at [email protected] or by phone at (714) 647-5355.
