Grant Description

The 2026 SPARK Grant for Early Childhood – Cycle 1 is administered by the Robins Foundation, a private philanthropic organization committed to enhancing the quality of life for children and families in the Richmond, Virginia region. The foundation focuses its funding on early childhood care and education (ECCE), recognizing the critical importance of early experiences in shaping long-term wellbeing, cognitive development, and school readiness. In line with its mission, the foundation has launched the first of two planned SPARK grant cycles for 2026 to support nonprofit organizations that work with children from prenatal stages through age five. This competitive grant program aims to fund organizations and projects that foster high-quality learning environments, promote strong adult-child interactions, support early childhood educators and caregivers through workforce development, and contribute to policy and advocacy efforts that advance ECCE. Grants begin at a minimum of $25,000, and the foundation gives priority to initiatives that are aligned with these four strategic areas. The grant is not intended to cover capital investments, travel, religious-based activities, or basic needs like food and housing, although organizations with religious affiliations may apply if their programs are secular. Eligibility is restricted to 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations that serve families and children in Richmond City, Chesterfield County, Henrico County, and Petersburg, Virginia. Organizations that received funding from Robins Foundation in December 2025 are asked to wait until the next cycle to apply. Pre-application engagement is mandatory and serves as a screening and alignment mechanism to ensure applicants are a good match for the foundation's priorities. The application process is staged in two parts. First, organizations must log into the GOapply portal starting January 21, 2026, to complete an eligibility quiz and pre-application questionnaire by February 4, 2026. Only after completing this initial step will applicants be able to schedule the required pre-application call with Meg Pienkowski, the foundation’s Program Director. These calls must take place between January 26 and February 6, 2026, and available slots may fill quickly. Full applications will only be accepted after this conversation and must be submitted through the same portal by March 6, 2026. Decisions will be communicated in mid-June 2026, allowing applicants several months to plan their programming should they be selected. This program operates on a biannual cycle, with a second SPARK grant cycle expected to open in July 2026. This recurring structure gives eligible nonprofits two opportunities each year to seek support for early childhood initiatives. Applicants are encouraged to consult the foundation’s posted grant application questions and AI policy documents as they prepare their submissions and may reach out for accommodations or support by contacting [email protected].
