Grant Description

The Chapman Prize, established through the Daniel and Barbara Chapman Trust, is an annual award that honors individuals and organizations in the United States making impactful contributions to society. Administered by Burke & Herbert Bank & Trust Company of Alexandria, Virginia, the award rotates its focus annually among four themes: Health & Wellness, Arts & Culture, Economic Prosperity, and Educational Success. For 2025, the designated theme is Economic Prosperity. Applicants eligible for the Chapman Prize must be either U.S. citizens or U.S.-based nonprofits that have been actively engaged in charitable work for a minimum of three years. Additionally, they must demonstrate a proven impact in the annual theme’s focus area, in this case, Economic Prosperity. Acceptable work may include efforts such as workforce development, affordable housing initiatives, financial literacy programs, or social entrepreneurship that support thriving, sustainable communities. The award amount typically ranges from $80,000 to $100,000 and must be utilized entirely within the United States. Only applicants who meet all eligibility requirements and submit complete applications—including a third-party recommendation letter, IRS determination letter, financial documents, a 300-word program summary, and a 750-word impact statement—will be considered. Applications are submitted exclusively online at www.ChapmanPrize.org and cannot be saved mid-session. The application period for the 2025 cycle opens on July 1st and closes on September 30th. The selection committee will review submissions starting October 1st and finalize selections by December 1st. All applicants will be notified by December 31st, and the 2025 awardee will receive the prize by year’s end. Evaluation criteria include the breadth and sustainability of impact, the applicant's role as a change agent, the extent of collaboration, and diversity in both outreach and internal structure. For questions or more information, applicants should consult the provided documents or visit the official website.
