Puyallup-White River Watershed Small Grants

The Puyallup-White River Watershed Small Grants Program is a locally administered funding initiative that supports community-led projects focused on improving water quality and habitat within the Puyallup-White River Watershed, also known as WRIA 10. This grant program is coordinated by Pierce County in partnership with the Puyallup River Watershed Council (PRWC), a nonprofit organization with a long-standing mission to protect, enhance, and restore the environmental, cultural, and economic health of the watershed. The PRWC, established as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit through a merger in 2011, also serves as the Local Integrating Organization (PWR-LIO) responsible for regional ecosystem recovery planning. The 2026 iteration of the Small Grants Program offers financial support for grassroots efforts that align with the broader environmental priorities of the watershed councils. Eligible projects may include invasive species removal, riparian plantings, community clean-up events, environmental education programs, rain garden installations, and other initiatives that benefit the health of local ecosystems. Award amounts are modest—capped at $2,500 per project—but they are non-reimbursable, meaning that funds will be disbursed up front, providing vital early-stage support to a wide range of community groups. Applications for this grant are due by May 6, 2026. A single online application serves for three of the participating watershed areas—Puyallup-White River, Chambers-Clover, and Nisqually—while a separate grant exists for the KGI watershed with slightly higher award limits. Interested applicants are encouraged to attend a scheduled virtual office-hours session on March 25, 2026, for application guidance. During this two-hour session, grant administrators will be available to address questions and provide feedback to improve application competitiveness. There are no formal eligibility restrictions in terms of organizational type. Individuals, nonprofits, schools, teachers, tribes, and government entities are all encouraged to apply. However, the program does not fund projects focused on profit-making, lobbying, or political advocacy. All applicants are responsible for reporting any grant income to the IRS, and only complete applications will be accepted for review. Proposals are evaluated based on alignment with local Action Agendas developed by watershed councils, relevance to habitat restoration and water quality, and community benefit. Projects should clearly demonstrate measurable environmental outcomes and potential for civic engagement. The Puyallup River Watershed Council, along with Pierce County, will notify successful applicants by June 2026. This grant opportunity is recurring annually.
