Artist Creative Practice Grant
This grant provides financial support to individual artists in the southeastern U.S. for professional development opportunities that can significantly advance their careers.
South Arts, a nonprofit regional arts organization, offers the Artist Creative Practice Grant to provide financial support for professional development opportunities that have the potential to significantly impact the careers of individual artists. Rooted in a commitment to enhancing access and equity across the southeastern United States, South Arts developed this grant to help artists overcome financial barriers that can prevent them from participating in career-advancing activities. The initiative reflects South Arts’ broader mission to support artists regardless of background or economic status while contributing to a thriving and inclusive arts ecosystem in its nine-state service region. The Artist Creative Practice Grant provides up to $3,000 to individual artists for milestone opportunities occurring between November 1, 2025, and June 30, 2026. These opportunities may include curated residencies, professional mentorships, scholarly research partnerships, public presentations, exhibitions, and entrepreneurial development such as e-commerce expansion or business consulting. Attendance at conferences and non-degree-granting classes is also eligible, although support for such activities is capped at $1,000. Artists must articulate how their proposed opportunity will lead to meaningful career growth and demonstrate alignment with the program’s intent. To qualify, applicants must be legal U.S. residents, 18 years of age or older, and reside in the South Arts region, which includes Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. Applicants must also maintain residency in the region during the award period and cannot be enrolled in a degree-seeking program during that time. All applicants must apply individually—collaborative projects or group opportunities (e.g., dance troupes or musical bands) are ineligible. Artists working across a wide range of disciplines, from traditional and visual arts to literature, design, and media arts, are encouraged to apply. Applicants may submit only one application per funding cycle and may not reapply for four subsequent cycles if awarded. Applications must be submitted via South Arts’ Salesforce portal. While the program operates on a rolling deadline, all applications must be received by April 30, 2026, at 11:59 PM. Applicants will receive notification based on the date of submission—submissions received by January 31, 2026, will be notified by March 1, 2026; those submitted between February 1 and April 30 will receive decisions by June 1, 2026. Grants will cover up to two-thirds of the total opportunity cost, with a minimum award of $500 and a maximum of $3,000. The remaining cost must be provided by the artist from other sources; South Arts funding cannot be used as a match. Upon grant acceptance, 75% of the funds will be disbursed, with the remaining 25% released upon submission and approval of a final report and supporting documentation. Grantees are required to keep accurate records and provide receipts as part of the reporting process, which is due within 30 days of the conclusion of the funded activity. Artists may contact Emmitt Stevenson, Artist Engagement Director at South Arts, for questions about the application or program details. The grant does not support degree programs, general booking conference performances, or activities involving the documentation or promotion of existing work. All activities and associated expenses must take place within the November 1, 2025, to June 30, 2026 window. The Artist Creative Practice Grant offers individual artists a strategic opportunity to build capacity, reach new audiences, and accelerate professional advancement across the vibrant arts communities of the American South.
