Grant Description

The NC IDEA ENGAGE grant program supports individuals and organizations that are building inclusive and vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystems across North Carolina. This initiative funds short-term activities that foster community engagement around entrepreneurship, such as structured programs, pilot initiatives, one-time events, educational activities for students, and other efforts that advance NC IDEA’s mission of inclusive economic development. The grant is part of NC IDEA’s broader commitment to support entrepreneurs and entrepreneurial support organizations (ESOs) through targeted, short-duration funding. ENGAGE grants provide funding of up to $5,000 for proposals that align with eligible activity categories. These include entrepreneurial programs like accelerators and incubators; pilots that test new, innovative approaches; events such as pitch competitions or conferences; student education initiatives; and miscellaneous efforts that connect or build capacity among ESOs. Grants are intended to be spent within one year. To be considered, applications must be submitted at least 60 days before the intended activity. Submissions are reviewed monthly, and decisions are typically issued within 4–6 weeks. Eligible applicants include non-profit and for-profit entrepreneur support organizations, local governments, higher education institutions, capital providers, service providers, and individuals. However, ENGAGE grants do not support operational costs for businesses, long-term engagements, equipment, overhead, or capital campaigns. Repeat funding is possible but limited to a maximum of three times per event or program, provided the applicant remains in good standing with NC IDEA. Applications are submitted online and must include a budget and clearly defined success metrics. Successful applicants are required to report on the achievement of those metrics at the end of the grant period. NC IDEA emphasizes the importance of alignment with its mission, specifically targeting programs that promote diversity, inclusion, and the potential for significant entrepreneurial growth across the state. To improve application quality, NC IDEA offers guidance on proposal writing. Applicants are advised to be specific and measurable, align with the goals of the ENGAGE program, and emphasize long-term impact. The use of relevant, well-defined, and trackable metrics is encouraged to demonstrate how the activity will contribute to a stronger entrepreneurial ecosystem in North Carolina.
