DoD Military Burn, Patient-Centered Research Award
This funding opportunity supports clinical research aimed at improving burn care for military personnel, focusing on practical applications that enhance treatment in challenging environments.
The Department of Defense (DOD) Fiscal Year 2025 (FY25) Military Burn Research Program (MBRP) Patient-Centered Research Award (PCRA) is administered by the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) under the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command. It seeks to address persistent disparities in translating newly discovered burn care knowledge into practice, particularly in resource-constrained and distributed operational environments where military personnel are most vulnerable to combat-related burn injuries. This funding opportunity aims to develop clinically useful findings that directly enhance treatment capabilities in austere settings, improving outcomes for Service Members and other military beneficiaries. The PCRA will fund clinical research and clinical trials that evaluate human-based data, aiming to improve acute burn care delivery and support its implementation close to the point of injury. The research must focus on practical applications, such as developing tools, policies, or interventions that support triage, treatment, and mitigation of burn injuries. Preclinical and animal research is not allowed. Studies may be prospective or retrospective and must involve human subjects or data. Topics of particular interest include cold injury management, fluid resuscitation, inhalation injuries, and mitigating long-term complications like neuropathy and pain. Projects must show strong relevance to military burn care, include preliminary data, and demonstrate potential for high-impact outcomes. Eligibility extends to both extramural and intramural organizations, including academic institutions, private entities, federal agencies outside the DOD, and foreign institutions. Principal Investigators must hold positions at or above Assistant Professor or be independent investigators in industry. While there are no restrictions on the number of submissions by a single PI, all awards are made to organizations, not individuals. Matching funds are not required. The application process is two-phased: a mandatory pre-application is due by June 23, 2025, and full applications, by invitation only, are due by September 8, 2025. Evaluation includes a pre-application screening, peer review for scientific merit, and a programmatic review for relevance and impact. Awards are expected to be announced no later than September 30, 2026. Applications must be submitted via eBRAP for pre-applications and either eBRAP or Grants.gov for full applications, depending on the organization type. Applicants must provide detailed documentation, including project narrative, technical and lay abstracts, regulatory strategy, and a transition plan. Studies involving human subjects must adhere to strict DOD and federal regulatory requirements, including Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval and review by the Office of Human and Animal Research Oversight (OHARO). Contact support is available through the eBRAP Help Desk (help@eBRAP.org, 301-682-5507) and Grants.gov (support@grants.gov, 800-518-4726).
