John S. Dunn Foundation Grant Program
This grant provides funding to nonprofit organizations in the greater Houston area for healthcare education initiatives, including nursing programs and clinics for underserved populations.
The John S. Dunn Foundation, a Texas-based charitable nonprofit organization, was established to honor the legacy of John S. Dunn through philanthropic investments that promote the well-being of the greater Houston community. With a longstanding commitment to healthcare and related fields, the Foundation focuses its grantmaking efforts on education, mental health, medical research, and healthcare accessibility, especially for underserved populations. Recently, the Foundation made a significant multiyear commitment to support mental health infrastructure through the establishment of the John S. Dunn Behavioral Sciences Center in Houston. As a result, additional funding in this specific area will be limited for the foreseeable future. The Foundation’s grant program supports a variety of initiatives including nursing education, healthcare clinics, mental health services, and medical research within the greater Houston area. While direct scholarships to individuals are not awarded, the Foundation does support nursing scholarship programs, endowments, and medical research chairs. Matching grants and collaborative proposals are encouraged, though applicants should note that multiyear funding requests are generally discouraged. Eligible applicants must be nonprofit, tax-exempt entities with 501(c)(3) status under the Internal Revenue Code and must not be classified as a private foundation or a Type III Section 509(a)(3) supporting organization. Grants are only available for activities conducted in the greater Houston area, and the Foundation does not fund individuals, for-profit businesses, capital campaigns, construction or furnishing expenses, or advocacy efforts. It also avoids regranting arrangements through other foundations. The application process is conducted entirely online, and submissions are accepted year-round. There are no set deadlines, and the Foundation’s Board of Trustees meets monthly to review applications. However, applicants may only apply once per calendar year. If a proposal is declined, the organization must wait until the next year to reapply. The application must include the organization’s IRS determination letter, requested funding amount, a summary and budget of the project, justification for the request, current organizational budget, audited financials, and lists of board members and officers. Funding is provided on a one-year basis, and there are no recurring or automatic renewals. Applications are evaluated based on alignment with the Foundation’s focus areas, financial and operational transparency, and the potential community impact of the proposed program or project. Video tutorials for completing the online application are available through the Foundation's website, and contact information can be found through the same portal.
