Grant Description

The California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) has announced the 2025 Weed Management Area Grants Program (WMAGP), which is now open for applications until February 28, 2025. This funding opportunity is designed to support Weed Management Areas (WMAs) in their efforts to manage and control invasive plant species. Grants are awarded on a competitive basis, with each WMA eligible to submit one proposal for up to $40,000 annually over three years. These grants are separate from the county Noxious Weed Grant Program funds and are intended to address broader regional weed management goals. The program aims to enhance the capacity of WMAs to combat invasive weeds, foster collaboration among local stakeholders, and protect natural and agricultural resources from the adverse effects of noxious weeds. Eligible WMAs, as identified on the CDFA’s eligibility map, may include single counties or multi-county regions working cooperatively. Applicants are encouraged to submit projects that demonstrate clear objectives, measurable outcomes, and alignment with integrated pest management practices. Funding may be used for various purposes, including on-the-ground weed control, public education, monitoring and mapping invasive species, and promoting best practices in weed management. Applicants are expected to develop detailed proposals outlining their strategies, goals, and expected impacts. The grant also supports activities that engage local communities and stakeholders in weed management efforts. Only Weed Management Areas designated on the eligibility map are allowed to apply. The program prioritizes regions with collaborative efforts between multiple stakeholders, including local governments, agricultural organizations, and environmental groups. Interested applicants should confirm their eligibility and prepare a strong proposal that meets program criteria. Submission requirements include completing the application form available on the California Grants portal or the CDFA’s website. Applications must detail the proposed activities, budget, and anticipated outcomes. Two informational Zoom meetings will be held to assist applicants: an overview of the grant application process on January 8, 2025, and a Frequently Asked Questions session on January 22, 2025. Applicants are encouraged to attend these sessions for guidance and support. Evaluation criteria will focus on the clarity and feasibility of the project proposal, the potential impact on weed management, and the applicant’s ability to execute and monitor the project effectively. Strong applications will also demonstrate innovative approaches and collaboration among regional stakeholders. Key dates include the application deadline on February 28, 2025. For more information or questions, applicants can contact Trevor Fox at trevor.fox@cdfa.ca.gov. Further details and resources are available on the CDFA website and the California Grants portal.
