Facade Improvement Grant Program
This program provides financial assistance to downtown Chehalis business and property owners for exterior improvements that enhance the historical character and visual appeal of their buildings.
The Experience Chehalis Facade Improvement Grant Program is designed to enhance the historic and aesthetic appeal of the downtown Chehalis commercial district. Administered by Experience Chehalis, a certified Main Street community, this grant supports business and property owners who wish to invest in façade improvements that preserve the architectural character of downtown while contributing to its revitalization. The program is led by the Economic Vitality Committee and seeks to encourage reinvestment in Chehalis’ Main Street corridor by funding design and physical enhancements to building exteriors. Grants are available to business owners, property owners, and leaseholders operating within the designated Main Street Program Area. Each building or business may receive a grant of up to 75% of approved project costs, capped at $2,500. Projects must relate to the external façade and be visible from the public right-of-way. Eligible activities include design work, exterior painting, historic restoration, signage, lighting, weatherization, and awnings. Multiple storefronts within the same building may qualify individually, provided each storefront has a unique mailing address and public entrance. The grant process is open on a rolling basis each calendar year and remains active until the $20,000 annual funding allocation is exhausted. Awards are made on a first-come, first-served basis. Projects must begin within 120 days of approval and be completed within 180 days. Exceptions or extensions must be requested in writing. Work commenced before approval may disqualify the applicant unless pre-approved communications occurred. Reimbursement is issued following submission of receipts and final inspection. To apply, applicants must submit a completed application, signed façade improvement agreement, design invoices, and contractor bids. Optional materials include building history, photographs, and material samples. The project must comply with city codes, and permits must be secured before work begins. Evaluations prioritize design consistency, historic relevance, readiness to begin, and location within the service area. This program is intended to preserve the small-town charm of downtown Chehalis, stimulate local investment, and enhance the area’s appeal for business, tourism, and community pride. Final award decisions are made by the Experience Chehalis Board following review by the Grant Committee. For further information, applicants can contact Experience Chehalis directly via phone or email.
