Grant Description

The Special Impact Litigation Grant Opportunity is offered by The Barbara McDowell Social Justice Center, a nonprofit organization dedicated to eradicating systemic injustices through litigation, advocacy, education, and grant-making. This initiative complements the Center’s Annual Grant Program and was created in response to the increasing urgency around threats to social justice and civil rights in the United States. With a focus on fostering high-impact legal actions, the Center provides financial support and legal collaboration to nonprofit organizations that seek to establish legal precedents and drive systemic change through litigation. This grant opportunity supports nonprofit organizations that are initiating new impact litigation cases that align with the Center’s mission. The case must address significant social justice issues and have the potential to advance the eradication of systemic injustices. The case must either have been filed on or after October 1, 2025, or be scheduled to be filed by December 31, 2026. Funding may also support cases in the formative stage, as long as the relevant parties and issues are identified and the case will be filed before the end of 2026. The Center specifically funds legal cases—not criminal proceedings, individual claims lacking broader implications, or amicus briefs. The grants are exclusively for attorney time charges and litigation expenses related to the specified case. Eligible applicants must be U.S.-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations. Past and current grantees are welcome to apply, provided the case they present has not been previously funded by the Center. Each organization may submit only one case for consideration. The Center encourages applications from nonprofits with a strong track record of community advocacy or experience in litigating high-impact cases, though emerging organizations actively developing a qualifying case are also welcome. Collaborative efforts with law firms or other social justice organizations are acceptable, especially when such partners have experience with high-impact litigation. As part of its partnership, the Center will serve as co-counsel on the case, offering litigation support in coordination with the grantee’s legal team. Applications must be submitted through the Center’s online portal during the open application window from March 16 to March 31, 2026. This is a one-step process, and applicants are strongly encouraged to review the detailed Grant Criteria, Application Scoring Criteria, Reporting requirements, and Grant Terms before submitting their application. The Center’s Grant Committee will initially review applications and recommend finalists to the Board of Directors for funding decisions. Notifications of award decisions will be sent by April 30, 2026. Each grant award ranges from $20,000 to $25,000. In addition to financial support, recipients benefit from legal collaboration with the Center’s staff, who serve as co-counsel and provide strategic support for advancing the litigation. All grant recipients must comply with the Center’s reporting and grant terms throughout the funding period. This grant opportunity is not currently listed as a recurring program, and the application cycle does not indicate future iterations at this time.
