Ann Snitow Prize
This annual award recognizes and supports mid-career individuals in the U.S. and Puerto Rico who are making significant contributions to feminist thought and activism through intellectual or artistic work.
The Ann Snitow Prize is an annual award recognizing outstanding feminist intellectual and activist work by individuals living and working in the United States or Puerto Rico. Named after the influential feminist scholar and organizer Ann Snitow, the prize honors those who embody the qualities she championed: a commitment to radical feminist thought, social justice activism, and intellectual or artistic innovation. The prize seeks to highlight and support individuals whose work blends rigorous intellectual inquiry or creative expression with transformative social and political engagement. The award offers a $12,000 unrestricted grant that recipients may use however they choose. Unlike need-based or project-specific awards, the Ann Snitow Prize emphasizes recognition over utility. The purpose is to celebrate and empower mid-career individuals who are making a meaningful impact at the intersection of feminist theory and activism, without imposing spending rules or requirements. This flexibility allows recipients to further their work in ways they find most meaningful, whether through continued research, organizing, or creative practice. Eligibility is open to people of any gender identity who are engaged in feminist intellectual and activist pursuits. Nominees may be academics, independent scholars, writers, artists, educators, or organizers—whether they work full-time, part-time, or on a volunteer basis. While the prize is not restricted to lifetime achievements, it generally favors candidates who are in the middle stages of their career, who demonstrate originality of thought, and who engage deeply in community-based or political work. Individuals cannot nominate themselves, and only one nomination per nominator is allowed each year. Joint nominations for two collaborators are permitted if their work is clearly integrated. The nomination process for the 2025 cycle opens on May 12, 2025, and closes on August 1, 2025, at 11:59 PM EST. Submissions must be made by email to nominate@annsnitowprize.com and include a 1–2 page cover letter, the nominee’s CV or resume, and a maximum of 20 pages of work samples. These samples may include written pieces, activist documentation, course syllabi, or video/audio content accessible via links. All materials must be submitted in English or include English translations/subtitles to ensure fair consideration by the jury. Submissions must be compiled using .doc, .txt, or .pdf file formats, and applicants should use no smaller than 12-point font. The cover letter is a crucial component and should explain how the nominee exemplifies both feminist intellectual rigor and effective social activism. The judging panel changes yearly and is curated to reflect diverse feminist perspectives, spanning age, race, gender, geography, academic and non-academic settings, and fields of activism and artistry. The recipient will be announced and awarded in December 2025. The prize does not require any future reporting or deliverables from the awardee. For further information or questions, interested parties may contact the organizers via email at info@annsnitowprize.com. Details about the Nomination Committee are available on the prize's website.
