The Business Improvement Grant (BIG) Program is administered by the City of Amarillo to support commercial property owners and business tenants in designated neighborhood plan areas seeking to enhance the visual appeal and structural compatibility of their buildings. This initiative provides both technical guidance and financial assistance to improve exterior aesthetics and foster economic development within targeted areas of Amarillo.
The program offers a matching grant of up to 50% of eligible project costs, with a maximum contribution of $20,000 for projects costing $40,000 or more. A special enhancement is available for properties located along Route 66: those that complete approved improvements by June 2026 may receive a 75% match instead of 50%, in celebration of the upcoming Route 66 Centennial. Eligible improvements include exterior paint, new doors or windows, signage restoration or installation, landscaping, new awnings, upgraded lighting, and accessibility improvements. Projects involving historic restoration are encouraged, provided they follow the Secretary of the Interior Standards for historic buildings and signage.
To qualify, applicants must own or lease commercial properties within Amarilloโs designated neighborhood plan areas and meet city construction and design codes. Tenants must submit written approval from property owners. Projects cannot be used to address existing code violations, previously insured repairs, or obligations under previous contracts. Only one grant application is permitted per property annually, and tax compliance is required.
The BIG Program excludes funding for interior work, structural alterations, playgrounds, and professional or architectural fees. Program guidelines and the official application packet are expected to be released shortly. Applications will be accepted starting November 3, 2025. Enhancements must be sufficiently robust to merit funding, and the city reserves the right to decline applications deemed inadequate.
Applicants may direct questions or seek assistance in determining eligibility by contacting Drew Brassfield, Assistant Director of Planning, at 806-378-5241 or via email at drew.brassfield@amarillo.gov. The program is managed by the Planning Department under the umbrella of Economic Development and TIRZ initiatives in Amarillo.
Emphasize visual and architectural compatibility; early completion for Route 66 match bonus; insufficient enhancements may be declined.
