The Urban Forestry Startup Grants support small projects aimed at initiating community tree care and management programs. Eligible applicants include cities, villages, towns, counties, tribes, and 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations in Wisconsin that meet certain criteria, such as starting or resuming community-wide tree care programs, or having low involvement in community tree care. Grants range from $1,000 to $5,000 and require a 50-50 match, with the total project cost ranging from $2,000 to $10,000. Projects must begin on January 1 and be completed within one calendar year. Eligible projects include tree planting, pruning, removal, inventory, insect and disease treatment, staff training, management plans, and public education/outreach. Only one startup grant may be awarded to an applicant per year, and a maximum of three within the lifetime of the program.
