Healthy & Thriving Communities Grant
This grant provides funding to nonprofit organizations in Broward County to improve health equity, well-being, and sustainability for underserved populations through health services, nutrition programs, and environmental initiatives.
The Community Foundation of Broward offers grants through its Healthy & Thriving Communities focus area to improve health equity, increase well-being, and promote sustainability across Broward County. These grants are available to nonprofit organizations with 501(c)(3) status or those using qualified fiscal sponsors, as long as they demonstrate charitable intent and serve the residents of Broward County. The Foundation emphasizes collaborative, equitable approaches that reach underserved populations, especially those experiencing disparities in health, nutrition, or environmental conditions. The Healthy & Thriving Communities grant supports programs that address the physical and mental health of Broward residents. Funded projects may include structured wellness activities to prevent or manage chronic illness, mental health services that increase access and reduce stigma, and health literacy initiatives. The Foundation seeks proposals that directly reduce health disparities and improve access to services for populations experiencing statistically higher health inequities. Another key funding area is food and nutrition. Grants may support expanded food distribution systems, including mobile and prepared meal services, community gardens, and food cooperatives. The Foundation also welcomes proposals that reduce food waste or integrate nutrition education into chronic disease prevention. Programs such as Food is Medicine, which provide medically tailored meals for individuals with severe illnesses, are encouraged. Environmental education and sustainability are core components of this funding area. The Foundation supports programs that improve environmental health through pollution reduction, water and air quality improvements, and resilience-building. Climate adaptation efforts such as flood mitigation, extreme weather preparation, and public engagement around environmental risks are eligible. Proposals that raise awareness and support action on climate resilience are highly encouraged. The application cycle for Healthy & Thriving Communities grants opens twice annually. For the current cycle, the submission deadlines are October 15, 2025, and March 1, 2026. All applications must be submitted through the Foundation’s online portal. A Candid Gold Seal of Transparency is required, and applicants must have at least two years of experience serving Broward County residents. Organizations cannot request more than $150,000 annually, and first-time grantees are only eligible for one-year funding. Multi-year grants are possible for returning grantees, with awards potentially renewed up to three years based on project scope and performance. Applications undergo a multi-step evaluation by both the Foundation staff and a community grants committee. Applicants may be invited to participate in virtual interviews, and award decisions are typically communicated within three to four months after submission. Funded applicants are expected to track outcomes, maintain financial documentation, and participate in collaborative learning events. The Foundation encourages participation in technical assistance workshops and virtual office hours to support applicants throughout the process. Contact for this focus area is Cassandra Burrell, Director of Community Impact, who can be reached at cburrell@cfbroward.org.
