Grant Description

The Carla B. Howery Teaching Enhancement Fund, administered by the American Sociological Association (ASA), supports innovative projects aimed at advancing the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) in the field of sociology. This initiative aligns with the Carnegie Foundation's framework for SoTL, which emphasizes systematic inquiry into teaching and learning practices, including problem identification, methodological study, application of findings, communication, and peer engagement. The Howery grant program provides funding of up to $2,500 per award, which may support an individual, program, department, or a committee from a state or regional association. The funds can be used for various purposes, such as summer salary, software or equipment purchases, travel, meetings, interview transcription, and survey implementation. Multiple grants may be awarded in a given year. The selection criteria focus on whether the project enhances sociology teaching and learning, functions as a seed initiative with lasting impact, and holds systemic influence within the discipline. The program is deliberately flexible to foster creativity and inclusivity across subfields of sociology. Applicants must submit a full application electronically in PDF format by February 6, 2025. Required materials include a completed electronic cover sheet, a detailed proposal following ASA’s guidelines, CVs for all investigators, and IRB documentation when applicable. While ASA membership is not necessary at the time of application, selected applicants must become members before receiving the award. All applicants are expected to comply with the ASA Code of Ethics. Grantees are encouraged to disseminate their findings by presenting at a special session during the ASA Annual Meeting. Additionally, awardees must submit both a mid-year report, due six months from the project start date, and a final report at the twelve-month mark. These reports are essential for assessing the ongoing impact and effectiveness of funded projects. Completed applications and any questions regarding the grant should be directed to the Academic and Professional Affairs Program at howerygrant@asanet.org. Notifications of award decisions will be sent out in April 2025.
