HBCU Clean Energy Education Prize Round 2
This grant provides funding to Historically Black Colleges and Universities to create or expand educational programs that engage K-12 and community college students in clean energy topics during summer or academic breaks.
The HBCU Clean Energy Education Prize: Round 2 Inspire Track is designed to promote clean energy programming for younger students, hosted by Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). This program aims to connect K-12 and community college students with clean energy topics and careers, creating pathways for education and workforce development. The prize competition spans two phases: Planning (Phase 1) and Implementation (Phase 2). In Phase 1, HBCUs are tasked with developing a detailed plan for clean energy-focused educational programs that will occur during summer or academic breaks. Programs must include specific details about timing, partners, program goals, number and age of students served, and logistics such as staffing and budget. Twelve winners will be selected to receive $40,000 each to implement their programs and advance to Phase 2. Phase 2 focuses on running the planned programs and measuring their impact, with an opportunity to win an additional $10,000 based on success metrics like participation rates, student outcomes, and lessons learned. Eligibility is limited to HBCUs as defined by the U.S. Department of Education. Institutions must be based in the U.S. or its territories, and only one proposal per HBCU is allowed, though they may partner on other submissions. Individuals and entities banned from federal programs or associated with foreign governments of risk are ineligible. Prize funds are paid directly to the HBCU, which may allocate them to partners at its discretion. Submissions must include an online public video, a narrative detailing program goals and implementation strategies, and letters of support from the HBCU administration. For Phase 2, additional documentation such as pre- and post-program assessments, educational materials, and evidence of program outcomes is required. Key dates include the opening of Phase 1 on January 8, 2025, with submissions closing on February 27, 2025. Winners will be announced in late March 2025. Phase 2 is expected to open in June 2025 and conclude with winner announcements in September 2025. The competition emphasizes innovative clean energy education, measurable impacts, and partnerships with community organizations. Review criteria include the quality and feasibility of the program plan, the outreach strategy, student engagement methods, and the sustainability of the initiative beyond the grant period.
