NCI Pathway to Independence Award (K99/R00 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)
This grant provides financial support to promising postdoctoral researchers in cancer-related fields, helping them transition to independent faculty positions through a structured mentorship and research development program.
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) Pathway to Independence Award (K99/R00) aims to assist promising postdoctoral researchers in transitioning to independent, tenure-track or equivalent faculty positions. This award offers support in two phases: a mentored phase (K99) lasting up to two years and an independent research phase (R00) of up to three years. Applicants must propose research relevant to NCI’s mission, including areas such as cancer biology, treatment, prevention, and survivorship, and demonstrate a compelling need for mentored development before transitioning to independence. The program does not support independent clinical trials but permits participation in trials led by a mentor. The mentored K99 phase provides a maximum salary of $100,000 per year with up to $30,000 for research and development expenses. During the R00 phase, up to $249,000 per year is available, encompassing salary, research costs, and indirect costs. To qualify, applicants must have a postdoctoral research position, hold a clinical or research doctorate (e.g., Ph.D., M.D.), and have no more than six years of postdoctoral experience at the time of application. Applicants must not hold independent research positions or have served as principal investigators on major research grants. Exceptions to eligibility, such as time extensions for certain life events, may be granted. Eligible institutions include U.S.-based higher education institutions, nonprofits, government entities, and some private organizations. Foreign institutions are not eligible to apply directly. The application must be submitted by the K99 sponsoring institution, which must also provide assurances of institutional support, resources, and the candidate’s ability to dedicate 75% of their professional effort to the proposed research and development activities. Applicants must submit a comprehensive career development plan and a dual-phase research proposal detailing goals, methods, and expected outcomes for both the K99 and R00 phases. Mentors play a critical role and must provide a tailored mentorship plan, affirm their commitment to the candidate’s career progression, and describe their strategy for fostering the candidate’s transition to independence. Applications must include reference letters, institutional support statements, and plans for responsible conduct of research training. Applications are reviewed based on the candidate’s potential for independence, the quality of the proposed career development and research plans, mentor and institutional support, and alignment with NCI’s mission. The review process evaluates scientific merit, feasibility, and the likelihood of the project fostering successful career development. Post-award evaluations monitor progress, with the R00 phase contingent upon securing an independent position and demonstrating readiness for transition. Key dates for submission include three annual deadlines (e.g., February 13, June 17, and October 15 for 2025). Prospective applicants are encouraged to submit early and to contact program officials for guidance. For further information, potential candidates can refer to the NCI K99/R00 program website or contact designated program directors.
