Grant Description

The America250KY: Exploring 250 Years Through the Arts grant program is administered by the Kentucky Arts Council in collaboration with the Kentucky Historical Society. It is part of Kentucky’s contribution to the national semiquincentennial celebration, commemorating 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. This initiative invites artists, arts and cultural organizations, community groups, and nonprofits across the Commonwealth to create lasting artistic legacies that reflect the rich history and diverse narratives of the state and nation. The program is guided by the Kentucky Arts Council’s core values, which applicants are encouraged to incorporate in their proposals. The program aims to support the creation and public presentation of art projects that explore and interpret themes related to America250KY. The funded projects are expected to engage the public, reflect on significant historical narratives—especially those of underrepresented communities—and contribute a meaningful legacy to the state's cultural landscape. Eligible activities include creating artworks, hosting performances or exhibitions, organizing festivals, facilitating arts instruction, and conducting school residencies, among others. Applicants are encouraged to collaborate with other artists, cultural institutions, or historical resources and are required to provide appropriate documentation of such partnerships when applicable. Funding is available in two tiers: individual artists may apply for up to $5,000, while organizations may request up to $10,000. A key requirement is that the budget must meet or exceed the grant request, and applicants are advised that artist services should constitute the majority of their project costs. Several restrictions apply: funding may not be used for indirect costs, equipment, fundraising, capital improvements, or non-public performances, among other disallowed uses. Additionally, applicants who have already received America250KY funding through related state agencies or commissions are not eligible to apply. Applicants must meet specific eligibility criteria. Individual artists must be legal residents of Kentucky and must provide verification such as a state ID, voter registration, or utility bill. They must also be U.S. citizens or have legal authorization to work permanently in the U.S. Organizations must hold current 501(c)(3) status or equivalent, and both individuals and organizations must register with the Kentucky Vendor Registration system and maintain an active Unique Entity Identifier (UEI). The contact information associated with their application must match these registrations. The application process is conducted via the GO Smart online system. Applicants must submit artist or organizational statements, résumés or programming descriptions, work samples, a detailed project narrative, and a proposed timeline with measurable milestones occurring between October 1, 2025, and September 1, 2026. Final reports are due no later than October 1, 2026. Applications are reviewed by a panel of professionals in arts and public history, based on four criteria: artistic excellence, project value and feasibility, relevance to America250KY themes, and historical research and relevance. Applicants needing assistance may contact Sarah M. Schmitt, Executive Staff Advisor, at sarahm.schmitt@ky.gov or call 502-782-1668. The Kentucky Arts Council’s general office line is 502-564-3757, and toll-free inquiries can be made at 1-888-833-2787. All application materials must be submitted by August 24, 2025, and applicants are advised to begin early to ensure technical and eligibility support is available if needed. Grant agreements must be signed and returned within 30 days of issuance, and acknowledgment of the funding partners must be made in all project communications.
