Grant Description

The Environmental Stewardship Community Grants aim to educate Hampton Roads youth (grades 3-12) on the health of local waterways and the impacts of sea level rise. These grants support programs that provide hands-on outdoor experiences, integrate environmental education related to the region’s water-based ecosystem, and engage youth in creating action plans for watershed preservation and restoration. The ultimate goal is to foster environmental stewardship among young people to enhance the region’s natural environment now and in the future. Grant proposals should focus on one or more desired outcomes: increasing youth knowledge of the health of Hampton Roads waterways, fostering positive behaviors that benefit the Chesapeake Bay and its watershed, and educating youth about sea level rise and its regional implications. Programs must demonstrate alignment with these priorities and provide a clear plan to measure effectiveness in achieving the desired outcomes. Eligible proposals can include requests for minor equipment purchases but should not focus on major capital projects or capital campaigns, which fall under a different grant category. Applications must clearly articulate how the program fits the stated priorities, the expected outcomes, and the methods for evaluating success. The application deadline is January 15. Prospective applicants are encouraged to review a sample application and submit their proposals through the provided online application portal. This initiative underscores the importance of equipping youth with knowledge and skills to improve waterway health and adapt to the challenges of sea level rise in the Hampton Roads region.
