2026 Outdoor Recreation Trails+ Grant
This funding program provides financial support to public and nonprofit entities in New Mexico for projects that improve outdoor trails and infrastructure, promoting access to nature and enhancing community health and well-being.
The Outdoor Recreation Trails+ Grant is a funding program administered by the New Mexico Outdoor Recreation Division (ORD), which operates under the New Mexico Economic Development Department. This division promotes outdoor recreation across the state as a means to strengthen local economies, support outdoor industry jobs, and promote community health and wellness. Since launching in 2020, the Trails+ Grant has become a cornerstone of the state's efforts to invest in outdoor infrastructure, contributing to the protection and accessibility of New Mexico’s natural resources. The program’s core objective is to support the planning, development, and improvement of outdoor trails and infrastructure. These projects must enhance access to nature, encourage environmental stewardship, and foster inclusive and equitable use of public outdoor spaces. In doing so, the Trails+ Grant plays a pivotal role in promoting physical and mental health, conserving natural landscapes, and contributing to the long-term vitality of forests, rivers, and watersheds. It also bolsters tourism and economic activity, providing both short- and long-term benefits for local communities and the broader state economy. The grant specifically supports projects that help connect people with nature and elevate the quality of life for both residents and visitors. Acceptable uses of funds include trail planning, trail building, infrastructure improvement, and similar enhancements to outdoor access. Since its inception, the program has funded 228 projects across 30 counties and 11 Tribal communities in New Mexico, distributing over $30.7 million in total. For Fiscal Year 2026, $7.2 million has been allocated for distribution through two application rounds. Eligibility for the Trails+ Grant is restricted to public and nonprofit entities with a clear role in outdoor infrastructure. Eligible applicants include Tribes, Pueblos, and Nations; municipalities; counties; nonprofits (Tier 2 only, not Tier 3); public preschools, schools, and school districts; public colleges and universities; soil and water conservation districts; and acequia and land grant associations. Private businesses and individuals are not eligible. Nonprofits applying must demonstrate sufficient capacity for project delivery. Each application is evaluated based on alignment with the program’s goals, community impact, and feasibility. The FY26 application cycle is split into two rounds. Round 1 opens on July 1, 2025, and closes on September 30, 2025. Round 2 runs from November 1, 2025, through January 31, 2026. Applicants are encouraged to review the detailed Trails+ Grant Guide, which outlines submission requirements, eligibility standards, and evaluation criteria. An informational webinar will be held on August 14, 2025, from 4:30 PM to 6:00 PM to assist prospective applicants with the process. Those seeking additional guidance can schedule a one-on-one meeting or contact Program Manager Carl Colonius at carl.colonius@edd.nm.gov. All potential applicants should ensure that their proposals are well-aligned with the program’s focus on environmental access and community well-being. The ORD encourages collaborative projects and supports efforts that extend or connect existing trail systems. The grant is not offered on a rolling basis but is recurring, with future cycles expected.
