Grant Description

Mass Humanities offers the "Expand Massachusetts Stories: Promises of the Revolution" grant to support projects that collect, interpret, and share narratives centered on the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. This funding opportunity emphasizes lifting up voices and experiences historically excluded from public discourse. The 2025 theme, “Promises of the Revolution,” seeks to engage communities in reflecting on the ideals and legacies of the American Revolution as the United States approaches its 250th anniversary in 2026. The thematic focus calls for exploration of the promises outlined in the Declaration of Independence—equality, life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness, and government by consent—and how these promises have resonated or fallen short across history and into the present day. Eligible projects may include community exhibits, oral histories, educational programming, short documentary films, and facilitated discussions. There is also room for projects examining underrepresented perspectives on the American Revolution or highlighting immigrant, Indigenous, and marginalized community experiences in the fight for self-determination and freedom. K-12 curriculum development centered on these themes is also encouraged. Eligible applicants must be one of the following: a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, a fiscally-sponsored association or filmmaker, a state or federally recognized tribe, or a non-federal government entity. All applicants must serve Massachusetts residents and comply with anti-discrimination laws and accessibility requirements. Mass Humanities also offers an "Advancing Equity Cohort" that guarantees early funding and project development support to up to 15 organizations demonstrating need and potential benefit. Applicants can express interest in this opportunity through their Letter of Inquiry. The application process opens on March 10, 2025, with a Letter of Inquiry (LOI) deadline of June 9, 2025. Applicants will be notified of their LOI status by July 7, 2025, at which point the full application window opens. Full proposals are due by September 2, 2025. Final awards will be announced by October 31, 2025, and the grant period will begin on November 1, 2025. Between 20 and 30 grants are expected to be awarded. Mass Humanities provides support resources including webinars and workshops to guide applicants through the submission process. Contact information and further guidelines are available through linked documents and the organization’s official website. This grant offers a unique opportunity for organizations across Massachusetts to elevate marginalized narratives and encourage civic engagement through storytelling.
