Choose Iowa Dairy Innovation Grant
This funding opportunity is designed for small dairy producers in Iowa to enhance their processing capabilities through modernization and efficiency improvements.
The Choose Iowa Dairy Innovation Grant is administered by the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS) to support Iowa-based dairy businesses in enhancing their operational efficiency and expanding on-farm dairy processing capabilities. This cost-share grant program is designed to reduce labor and increase the production capacity of small-scale dairy producers by funding eligible capital expenditures. For the 2026–2027 cycle, a total of $500,000 in grant funds has been allocated, with each award capped at $100,000. The initiative aligns with Choose Iowa’s broader mission of strengthening local food systems, promoting Iowa-grown agricultural products, and creating new market opportunities for producers across the state. Eligible applicants include individuals, businesses, agricultural cooperatives, nonprofit organizations, and local governments that operate in Iowa. Applicants must be in good legal and financial standing with the state, employ fewer than 50 individuals, and hold or be in the process of obtaining a permit from IDALS. The business must not be undergoing bankruptcy or have had any recent regulatory infractions. Choose Iowa brand membership is not required to apply. This reimbursement-based program mandates a one-to-one financial match from private, non-governmental sources, such as cash or financing. In-kind contributions are not accepted. Funded projects must aim to expand existing dairy processing capabilities or implement labor-reducing technologies on farms. Eligible uses of grant funds include the purchase of equipment such as pasteurization systems, processing vats, packaging and labeling machines, and robotic milking devices. Technologies that assist with automated feeding, health monitoring, or cleaning may also be eligible. All projects must be new initiatives that begin after the signing of the grant agreement and must be completed within 12 months. Any expenses incurred before formal grant approval will not be reimbursed. The application window opens on March 1, 2026, and closes at noon on April 17, 2026. Applicants must submit their applications through the Choose Iowa grant portal and are encouraged to include supporting documentation such as quotes, estimates, letters of support, and a detailed budget. A virtual office hour session is scheduled for March 11, 2026, to address applicant questions. All submitted projects are competitively scored, with priority given to proposals that demonstrate strong alignment with program goals, cost-effectiveness, a feasible timeline, and meaningful economic impact on Iowa agriculture. Applicants must score at least 60 points to be eligible for funding consideration. Award decisions will be made in June 2026, followed by contract issuance and implementation. Funds will be disbursed on a reimbursement basis upon successful project completion, with documentation including receipts and a final report featuring photos and outcome summaries required at the time of reimbursement. Projects will also be subject to audit and record retention requirements for three years following completion. Failure to meet reporting obligations may result in forfeiture of funds or exclusion from future programs. This grant program represents a strategic investment in the resilience and competitiveness of Iowa's dairy sector. By facilitating infrastructure and technology upgrades, it supports the long-term viability of small dairy operations while reinforcing the local food economy.
