Champions In Action Grant Program
This program provides $50,000 in funding and support to nonprofit organizations in select regions that are working to integrate artificial intelligence into their operations to enhance community impact.
The Champions in Action program is an initiative of Citizens, a financial institution committed to community development and corporate responsibility. Launched in 2002, this program was created to recognize and support nonprofit organizations that are actively addressing pressing social issues within local communities. Over the years, Citizens has awarded over $12.3 million in funding to more than 400 nonprofit organizations through this program. In collaboration with media outlets, Citizens extends its support beyond monetary contributions by offering publicity, local media exposure, and volunteer assistance. This multi-faceted support model is designed to amplify the work of selected nonprofits and enhance their overall community impact. The 2026 cycle of the Champions in Action award focuses specifically on building artificial intelligence (AI) readiness and capacity within the nonprofit sector. This theme acknowledges the increasing interest and urgency among nonprofits to integrate AI technologies into their operations. Despite growing exploration of AI—over 85% of nonprofits are reportedly experimenting with these tools—only 24% currently have a formal AI strategy. A majority of organizations cite time and staffing limitations as major barriers to adoption. In response, Citizens aims to support nonprofits that are proactively embracing innovation and demonstrating leadership in responsible, mission-aligned AI integration. The award provides a total of $50,000 in unrestricted funding to the selected nonprofit. In addition to financial support, the chosen Champion receives local media coverage, volunteer support from Citizens employees, and various promotional opportunities to help raise awareness of their mission and activities. These elements are intended to not only strengthen the organization’s operational capacity but also expand its reach and effectiveness within its target communities. Eligibility for this cycle is geographically restricted to nonprofits based in specific regions, including California (Los Angeles or San Francisco), Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York City, Pennsylvania (Greater Philadelphia or Greater Pittsburgh), Rhode Island, and Southern Florida. Eligible organizations must be recognized nonprofits with a total annual operating budget ranging from $250,000 to $5 million. Furthermore, applicants must be able to provide one to two volunteer projects, including at least one skills-based opportunity for Citizens employees. Past recipients of the award may reapply if at least five years have passed since their previous selection. The application deadline for the 2026 cycle is March 13, 2026. The winning organization will be publicly announced in July 2026. Applicants must complete the submission process by the deadline to be considered. There are no pre-application requirements such as letters of intent or concept papers. The program does not mention recurring frequency or rolling deadlines; however, themes are announced biannually, suggesting the possibility of future cycles. Overall, the Champions in Action program represents a strategic investment in nonprofit innovation, particularly in the evolving area of AI capacity-building. By offering a mix of financial, volunteer, and promotional resources, Citizens seeks to empower mission-driven organizations that are preparing to meet modern challenges with technological resilience and creativity.``
