Javits Neuroscience Investigator Award Extension Request (Type 4 Clinical Trial Optional)
This funding opportunity provides financial support for established neuroscientists to extend their research projects, ensuring continuity and progress in the field of neurological disorders.
The Javits Neuroscience Investigator Award Extension Request (Type 4 Clinical Trial Optional) is a funding opportunity administered by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), a component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), under the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. This opportunity serves as an extension mechanism for current awardees of the NINDS Javits Award (R37), allowing them to apply for up to three additional years of support. The overall objective of the Javits Award program is to provide sustained funding for highly productive neuroscientists with a history of exceptional performance. The grant supports the continuation of research projects initially funded through the MERIT (Method to Extend Research in Time) mechanism. Eligible applicants are limited to current R37 awardees whose research remains within the scope of the original aims and who can demonstrate substantial progress. The second phase, or extension, is granted through a Type 4 revision application, and proposals may include or exclude clinical trials. This funding mechanism is designed to offer continuity in neurological research, enabling long-term projects with complex or evolving scientific goals. The award duration for the extension is limited to three years, and budgets must align with those indicated in the parent award's Notice of Award. Applicants must submit their Type 4 request no later than 60 days before the end of their initial project period. Importantly, phase 2 submissions may not modify the original clinical trial or human subjects designation. Application content includes a concise research plan limited to one page and a progress summary not exceeding two pages, along with all standard SF424 (R&R) application components. While there is no cost-sharing requirement, applicants must complete all standard NIH registrations in systems such as SAM.gov, eRA Commons, and Grants.gov before submission. Application packages must be submitted electronically using ASSIST, Grants.gov Workspace, or institutional submission systems. Only requests from qualified investigators holding an active R37 award will be considered. NIH policies on inclusion of women, minorities, and individuals across the lifespan, as well as vertebrate animal protections, biohazard safety, and foreign institution requirements, apply. Applications do not undergo peer review but are administratively evaluated by NINDS staff based on scientific progress, alignment with original project aims, and merit for continued support. The extension becomes effective immediately after the original funding period concludes. Though the funding opportunity officially expires on September 16, 2025, applications may be accepted shortly thereafter under NIH's late or continuous submission policies, pending approval. For scientific or grants-related inquiries, applicants should contact their assigned Program Officer or Grants Management Specialist.
