Anonymous Was A Woman Environmental Art Grants
This grant provides financial support for women-identifying artists in the U.S. to advance existing environmental art projects that engage with ecological issues and promote public participation.
The Anonymous Was A Woman Environmental Art Grants (AWAW EAG) provide significant financial support for women-identifying artists whose work addresses pressing environmental issues. Administered through the New York Foundation for the Arts, this initiative offers grants of up to $20,000 for projects that not only highlight environmental concerns but engage with them actively. For the 2026 funding cycle, the program will allocate over $470,000 in total funding. Rooted in values of ecological and social ethics, this grant seeks to advance projects already in development and enrich public discourse and engagement through the arts. The program is particularly open to projects informed by Indigenous and ancestral practices that emphasize systems thinking and relational awareness. The AWAW EAG is made possible through core funding by Anonymous Was A Woman, with additional contributions from individual donors. The grants are intended for individual artists or collectives led by women-identifying individuals, including trans women and others with gender identities designated female at birth. Applicants must be at least 18 years old, reside in the United States, its territories, Tribal Nations, or the District of Columbia, and not be enrolled in any degree-seeking program during the grant term. Organizational partnerships are allowed, but the organization itself cannot be the lead applicant. Prior recipients of this grant are ineligible to apply again, though recipients of other NYFA or AWAW programs are welcome to apply. Eligible projects must already be in progress and must include a public engagement component that is free and accessible to the general public within the grant period of August 2026 to August 2027. Funded projects may fall within any artistic discipline and may be executed anywhere globally, provided the project lead is U.S.-based. Projects are evaluated for their alignment with themes such as eco-social engagement, regeneration, climate change, interspecies relationships, and systems restoration. Proposals should demonstrate clear ethical considerations, a realistic project timeline, and a meaningful community impact plan. Applications open on February 10, 2026, at 10:00 AM ET and close on April 7, 2026, at 5:00 PM ET. All applications must be submitted through the Submittable platform, which requires account registration for new users. Late submissions will not be accepted. A live virtual information session will be held on February 25, 2026, to guide prospective applicants through the requirements and application process. Applicants will be notified of funding decisions in August 2026, with the funding period running through August 2027. The application requires the following: detailed applicant and project information; a project synopsis and timeline; public engagement plans; impact statements; a complete project budget; and work samples. The lead applicant is responsible for managing the funds. Applications are reviewed through a three-round panel process. Panelists—consisting of past grantees and experts—evaluate applications based on project clarity and feasibility, community and environmental impact, and artistic merit. The highest scoring proposals are discussed in a final round to select awardees. For further information, applicants can contact NYFA at [email protected] or by phone at (212) 366-6900 ext. 252. All updates, including recordings of the information sessions and details about past recipients, can be accessed through the NYFA website. The AWAW EAG exemplifies how art can serve as both a creative and civic intervention in the face of ecological crises, and this program continues to foster leadership and visibility for women environmental artists nationwide.
