Grant Description

The Anonymous Was A Woman Environmental Art Grants (AWAW EAG) provide financial support for environmental art projects led by women-identifying artists in the United States and U.S. Territories. This grant, funded by Anonymous Was A Woman, seeks to back projects that not only highlight environmental concerns but actively engage with them in an ethical and impactful way. The program particularly encourages projects that explore interdependence, relationships, and systems through Indigenous and ancestral practices. The AWAW EAG provides grants of up to $20,000 per project to assist in completing or advancing an existing environmental art initiative. New projects are not eligible, and all funded projects must have a public engagement component that is free to attend and takes place within the grant term of August 2025 to August 2026. The grant emphasizes sustainability and ethical sourcing of materials. The funds provided must be used to complete the outlined project, with the flexibility to reallocate as needed to achieve the intended goals. To be eligible, applicants must identify as a woman and/or female, including trans women and people of variable gender identities who were designated female at birth. Applicants must be 18 years or older and must reside in one of the 50 U.S. states, a Tribal Nation, a U.S. Territory, or the District of Columbia by the grant deadline. Applicants cannot be currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program during the grant term and cannot have previously received an AWAW EAG grant as the lead applicant. However, past recipients of other NYFA and AWAW grants remain eligible. Organizations may not apply as lead applicants, though collaborations with organizations are allowed. Applications must be submitted online via Submittable, with the deadline set for Tuesday, April 15, 2025, at 5:00 PM ET. The application requires details on the lead applicant, project synopsis, milestones, environmental and social impact, public engagement plans, target audience, outreach strategy, and budget, including how the grant funds will be used. Applicants must also submit work samples, and optional materials like artist bios, letters of commitment, or permits if applicable. The review process consists of three rounds of evaluation conducted by a panel assessing project clarity and feasibility, environmental impact and community engagement, and artistic merit. Applications undergo preliminary, in-depth, and final discussions before selecting recipients. Final notifications will be sent in August 2025, with project implementation occurring between August 2025 and August 2026. Recipients will also be publicly announced during this period.
