The Couch Family Foundation supports initiatives that promote child and family well-being, particularly within the Upper Valley of New Hampshire and Vermont, and the island of Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts. Through its “Cherished Communities” funding priority, the Foundation partners with nonprofit organizations that exhibit strong leadership, a collaborative approach to community engagement, and a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
This funding stream emphasizes two key strategies: enhancing early childhood development and fostering vibrant, resilient communities. The Foundation supports programs focused on early learning and development for children from prenatal stages to age five, including those related to health, mental health, and family support services. It also funds initiatives that address significant or emerging community needs and promote inclusivity and justice.
Unlike the Foundation's statewide early care and education initiative in New Hampshire, the Cherished Communities grant is open to new applicants and welcomes first-time grant seekers. Interested organizations are encouraged to contact Foundation staff for guidance and to discuss project alignment before submitting an application. The Foundation strongly advises applicants to highlight their impact on children and families in the specified geographic focus areas when crafting their proposals.
Eligible applicants must be nonprofit organizations with 501(c)(3) status or have a fiscal sponsor with such designation. The Foundation does not provide grants to individuals or religious organizations, nor to public, private, or independent elementary or secondary schools. However, requests from nonprofits aiming to improve educational outcomes or well-being for children in schools may be considered.
Funding is available for a variety of purposes, including general operations, specific projects, capital improvements, and event sponsorships. However, applications for capital and event sponsorship support must be preceded by a consultation with Foundation staff. Event sponsorships are limited to organizations that already have a relationship with the Foundation.
The grant application process is structured in three annual cycles. For 2025, application periods are January 15 to March 31, April 1 to June 30, and July 1 to September 26, with award notifications occurring in June, September, and December respectively.
