Grant Description

The George Family Foundation is a private philanthropic organization headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Known for its commitment to holistic support and values-driven philanthropy, the foundation invests in initiatives that promote individual well-being, community vitality, and systemic change. Over its history, the foundation has identified and nurtured key focus areas including spirituality, youth development, leadership, and the environment. In celebration of its 30th anniversary, the foundation continues to refine its priorities to align with evolving community needs while remaining anchored in its original mission. For new prospective grantees seeking funding in the Environment focus area, the George Family Foundation has a clear and structured application process. Organizations must first submit a Letter of Inquiry (LOI), which introduces their mission and how it aligns with the foundation's goals. Only 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations are eligible to apply, and they must operate in one of four geographic areas: Minnesota, Dallas, Northern San Francisco Bay Area/Marin County, or the Vail Valley. LOIs are the first stage in a two-step application process and are accepted during a specific window each year depending on the focus area. The LOI window for environmental projects runs from March 1 through June 5 annually. The foundation's funding strategy is selective and emphasizes support for established programs over new or pilot initiatives. Preference is given to organizations with annual operating budgets exceeding $1 million, and funding is typically limited to a small percentage of a program's overall budget. The foundation positions itself as part of a broader network of funders rather than a lead donor, underscoring a philosophy of collaborative philanthropy. Importantly, requests for capital improvements, endowments, or medical/scientific research are not considered. Once an LOI is submitted, a rigorous internal review process follows. Only a small number—approximately 4%—of LOIs are invited to submit full proposals, and of those, roughly 1% ultimately receive funding. For those selected, full proposals are typically due in late summer, and funding decisions are made during the foundation's December board meeting. Notifications are sent out to all applicants, whether selected or not, in August. Organizations invited to submit full proposals are provided access to the foundation’s proposal portal, detailed instructions, and deadlines. The application process does not involve preliminary phone calls or meetings for new applicants. This policy is designed to conserve resources and ensure transparency. Instead, potential applicants are encouraged to focus on carefully aligning their work with the foundation’s priorities and presenting a compelling case within the LOI. Currently, the foundation is not accepting new LOIs for its Community or Next Generation Fund areas. For inquiries, organizations can contact Andrea Ricci, the Grants and Operations Manager, at the George Family Foundation office in Minneapolis. While the online LOI portal is currently closed, it will reopen for the Environment cycle on March 1, 2026. Organizations should be prepared to submit their LOIs well in advance of the June 5 deadline, bearing in mind the foundation's highly competitive selection process.
