Grant Description

The Pulitzer Center has announced a special journalism grant initiative focused on the intersection of climate change and labor. This grant aims to support journalists, editors, and media organizations that are committed to covering the critical ways in which climate change is reshaping global labor markets. Emphasizing gender inequality, economic displacement, and community resilience, the program invites impactful, investigative reporting proposals that elevate underrepresented voices, particularly from the Global South. This grant opportunity underscores the profound labor implications of the climate crisis, especially in terms of business accountability, gender disparities, and adaptation strategies. Projects that explore trade and supply chain dynamics, unregulated labor sectors, and the challenges faced by women in climate-vulnerable regions are particularly encouraged. The funder is looking for proposals that pursue a transformative narrative—those that challenge established systems, encourage transparency, and inform the public with urgency and depth. Journalistic outputs may span print, broadcast, digital, visual, radio, or podcast formats, and must demonstrate clear distribution strategies and editorial partnerships. Applications are open to freelance and staff journalists, filmmakers, radio producers, and photographers of all nationalities. Collaborative submissions by newsrooms and teams are also welcomed, provided a lead applicant is designated. Successful projects will be expected to publish by September 2026, with preference given to work that reaches diverse audiences and centers the lived experiences of frontline communities affected by climate-driven labor disruption. Applicants must submit a concise project description (no more than 250 words), a proposed reporting and publication timeline, a preliminary budget (excluding applicant stipends), and three relevant samples of their previous work. Two professional references, a current CV, and letters of interest or commitment from media outlets are also required. The budget may include costs for travel, lodging, meals, local reporting support, and data visualization, among others. Applications can be submitted in multiple languages, including English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, and bahasa Indonesia. The deadline for submissions is March 6, 2026. Grant amounts range from $5,000 to $15,000, depending on project scope. Selected grantees will be notified by March 30, 2026. The grant is disbursed in two parts: half upon signing of the agreement and half upon submission of the primary published material. For any questions regarding the application or pitch, applicants can contact Rozina Breen, director of editorial programs, via email at [email protected].
