Grant Description

Walmart’s Spark Good Local Grants program is part of the corporation’s broader commitment to strengthening the communities it serves. The program is funded and administered directly through Walmart U.S. stores, Sam’s Clubs, and Distribution Centers. These facilities provide localized support to nonprofit and public-serving organizations addressing community-specific needs. The initiative underscores Walmart’s philosophy that strong communities contribute to a stronger business and customer base. Local grants range from $250 to $5,000 and are distributed through an open application process across three cycles during Walmart’s fiscal year 2027. The program is open to organizations that operate within the same service area as the facility from which they are requesting funding. Eligible applicants include verified 501(c)(3) public charities, certain government entities, educational institutions including K-12 public and nonprofit private schools, community colleges, and universities, as well as faith-based organizations providing broad community services. Each applicant must be verified by Deed, Walmart’s third-party validation partner, and have an active Spark Good account on Walmart.com. Organizations must be able to demonstrate that their proposed projects address clear, specific local needs and align with the program's values of community trust, impact, and cohesion. Applications are submitted through Walmart’s online Spark Good portal and must be completed by an authorized user of the verified organization’s account. Grant submissions are reviewed by local facility managers, who evaluate applications based on criteria such as alignment with Walmart’s community engagement priorities, the effectiveness and clarity of the proposed work, the organization’s standing and compliance, and the projected impact. Grant administrators and managers reserve the right to modify award amounts. Once a funding decision is made, applicants are notified via email. If approved, organizations must provide accurate banking information within 21 days of the recommendation notice to receive payment via JP Morgan’s electronic transfer system. The program offers three annual funding cycles: Cycle 1 runs from February 1 to April 15, Cycle 2 from May 1 to July 15, and Cycle 3 from August 1 to November 30. Applications not funded in one cycle may not reapply to the same facility during the same fiscal year. Organizations may hold up to 25 applications, either pending or approved, at any given time. Each application is evaluated independently, and funding decisions are finalized prior to the next cycle's opening. Walmart places strong emphasis on responsible governance and inclusion. Organizations found to discriminate based on protected categories such as race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability are excluded from consideration. Furthermore, recipients must agree to Walmart’s logo usage and recognition guidelines and affirm their compliance with the Spark Good program rules. If a recommended organization fails to complete the electronic payment setup within the 21-day window, the grant offer is automatically rescinded. This grant program is particularly notable for its wide thematic support areas—ranging from hunger relief and environmental sustainability to community enrichment and disaster relief. Spotlight examples from previous recipients illustrate the breadth of Walmart's engagement, with grants awarded to support educational programs, employment training, nature preservation, and community services. Through this initiative, Walmart reinforces its role as not only a retailer but also a partner in local development and resilience.
