Paint Iowa Beautiful
This program provides paint and coatings to Iowa communities for volunteer-led projects that beautify public spaces and foster civic pride.
The Paint Iowa Beautiful program is a longstanding community enhancement initiative administered by Keep Iowa Beautiful in partnership with Diamond Vogel Paint. This collaboration began in 2003 and has since contributed paint for over 1,651 projects across Iowa, revitalizing more than five million square feet of public space. Diamond Vogel donates paint and coatings to eligible projects aimed at improving the appearance of public-facing facilities, buildings, and parks, reinforcing a sense of pride and civic engagement within communities across the state. Keep Iowa Beautiful, through this program, seeks to empower volunteer-led efforts that beautify and revitalize shared spaces, thereby supporting the economic and aesthetic well-being of towns and cities in Iowa. Paint Iowa Beautiful projects often involve collaborations between local governments, nonprofits, and community organizations, with a preference for proposals that engage volunteers, youth, or underserved populations. Projects that visibly enhance public amenities or foster community leadership are scored more favorably during the evaluation process. Eligible applicants include nonprofit, public, and private entities located in Iowa. The program provides Diamond Vogel paint products, including stain, primer, and coatings, which may be picked up at any retailer carrying the brand. The average 2025 grant award was approximately 8 gallons, with most awards ranging from 5 to 10 gallons. Projects requesting over 30 gallons typically receive lower ratings, encouraging modest and impactful proposals. Applications for the 2026 cycle are open from November 2025 through February 12, 2026. All awarded paint must be purchased and used by December 31, 2026, with reimbursement submissions due by that date. To be reimbursed, recipients must submit proof of purchase and photographic documentation of completed projects. Only the pre-tax cost of approved Diamond Vogel paint products will be reimbursed, and only up to the quantity approved in the grant. Successful applications demonstrate high community value, volunteer involvement, and strong local partnerships. Government-led applications without substantial community engagement may be rated lower, while those led by or involving nonprofits and youth groups are given preference. Reimbursement is only granted for approved projects completed within the calendar year of the award, with no carryover of unused allocations. The program continues to accept applications annually, supporting communities in enhancing their visual landscape and fostering civic pride.
