Samuel F. Atkins and Barbara H. Atkins Memorial Fund
This grant provides financial support to nonprofit organizations that assist low-income individuals and families with basic needs while also promoting animal welfare in the Boreal Waters Community Foundation area.
The Samuel F. Atkins and Barbara H. Atkins Memorial Fund is a charitable grant program administered through the Boreal Waters Community Foundation. It was established to honor the legacy of Samuel and Barbara Atkins by supporting projects that assist low-income or disadvantaged individuals with basic human needs, while also promoting the welfare of animals. The fund specifically targets high-need populations and emphasizes tangible community impact and documented financial hardship. Funding priorities for this grant focus on initiatives that serve individuals or families facing extreme financial challenges. The program also supports efforts that address both human and animal welfare concurrently. Eligible proposals should demonstrate a strong understanding of community needs and present a clear plan for achieving measurable outcomes. Consideration is given to projects with a direct public benefit and the capacity to positively influence the lives of those most at risk in the community. Examples of eligible activities include emergency food distribution, shelter services for people experiencing housing insecurity, and equipment purchases to enhance service delivery for both humans and animals. Animal-related projects may also be supported, such as programs that involve service animals or animal-assisted therapy for individuals with physical disabilities. Grants may also be used to support adaptive programs, including instructor training for therapeutic services, and general operating support for eligible organizations delivering critical services. The fund serves the geographic area defined by the Boreal Waters Community Foundation and is open to organizations providing services within this region. Eligible applicants must be designated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, a Section 170(c)(1) public entity (such as a public school or government agency), a Section 7871 tribal government, a church, or an organization operating under a fiscal sponsor that meets one of these criteria. All applicants must demonstrate alignment with the fund's priorities and operate within the foundationโs service area. The Fall 2025 grant cycle opens on August 12 and closes on September 15. An optional Zoom information session is available to prospective applicants on August 12. Submitted applications will be reviewed between September 24 and October 27. Decisions will be announced on November 19, and grant disbursements are expected by November 26. The funding period begins on or after January 1, 2026, and extends for up to 12 months. There is no requirement for a pre-application or letter of intent. Organizations with questions regarding eligibility or application procedures are encouraged to contact Kursula Harris, Senior Community Impact Associate, via email at kursula@borealwaters.org.
