Grant Description

The "Fresh and Healthy Food for All in Columbia County" initiative is a grant program developed by the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation. This initiative aligns with the foundation's broader mission to ensure that all residents of Columbia County, particularly those with limited resources, have consistent access to fresh and healthy food. The program seeks to address immediate food insecurity while simultaneously implementing long-term systemic changes to improve food access for everyone in the county. The primary beneficiaries of this grant program are households in Columbia County with limited resources, defined as those living below 200% of the poverty income level. The initiative aims to empower these individuals by providing them with the knowledge, tools, and capital necessary to seek and demand healthy food. Furthermore, it strives to ensure an adequate supply of healthy food is available at reasonable prices for these households. The program's priorities and focuses revolve around three key areas of impact. Firstly, fostering knowledge and demand for healthy food among Columbia County residents. Secondly, increasing the availability and affordability of healthy food, especially for those with limited resources. Thirdly, promoting communication and collaboration among community members, organizations, and businesses to co-create sustainable food solutions. Expected outcomes include a reduction in food insecurity within Columbia County and a transformation of the local food system to enhance long-term access to healthy food for all. Measurable results will likely be observed in increased access to fresh produce, grains, legumes, and other essential healthy staples for targeted populations. The initiative defines "fresh and healthy food" as items that travel minimal food miles, emphasizing local and nutritious options. The Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation's strategic priorities are evident in this initiative's comprehensive approach, which seeks to address both immediate needs and systemic issues. Their theory of change appears to be based on the idea that by simultaneously increasing demand, supply, and community collaboration, they can create a more equitable and sustainable food system in Columbia County. Grants will range up to $5,000, with a total of $24,000 available. Eligible applicants include Columbia County food pantries, food distribution sites, farmers markets, schools, nonprofit organizations, and fiscally sponsored organizations that are based in and serve residents of Columbia County and possess 501(c)(3) status or operate under fiscal sponsorship.
