Global Youth Action Fund
This grant provides funding and mentorship to empower young changemakers aged 12 to 19 worldwide to develop innovative projects that address pressing global challenges aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
The Global Youth Action Fund (GYAF), launched by the International Baccalaureate (IB) in 2023, is a global initiative designed to support and empower young changemakers aged 12 to 19. Rooted in the IB’s broader mission to foster a better and more peaceful world through education, this grant program provides both funding and mentorship to secondary school students around the globe. With more than 290 funded projects across multiple continents, the GYAF recognizes the determination and innovation of young people as they tackle some of the world’s most pressing challenges. From digital inclusion efforts in Lima to climate change solutions in Jakarta, the fund supports a vibrant movement of youth-led action aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Each year, students from around the world—whether enrolled in IB World Schools or not—are invited to apply individually or in teams. The program emphasizes the value of collaboration and community-building, encouraging young applicants to draw from their personal experiences and aspirations to craft purposeful projects. Eligible applicants must be secondary school students aged between 12 and 19 at the time of the application deadline. Projects must clearly align with one or more of the 17 UN SDGs, and the fund particularly values proposals that demonstrate a strong vision, creativity, measurable impact, and the potential for sustainability. Applications are evaluated by a global panel of experts, educators, and youth leaders who assess each submission based on its purpose and vision, innovative approach, projected impact, and ability to engage others. The review process favors authenticity and originality, encouraging applicants to express themselves genuinely. Reviewers seek fresh thinking and practical strategies capable of delivering real change. While applicants may use digital tools, including AI, to support their expression, the authenticity of the student voice remains a central criterion. The grant offers up to $3,000 USD in funding per project, depending on the proposed budget and determined needs. In addition to financial support, selected students gain access to mentorship opportunities and connections with social entrepreneurship leaders and fellow youth grantees worldwide. This combination of funding and mentorship supports both immediate implementation and long-term development of student-led initiatives. Projects culminate in a final review and reflection session, including a budget evaluation to assess outcomes and learning. To apply, students must submit a complete application through Submittable, including a detailed pitch deck (up to 8 slides), a 3-minute recorded video pitch, and one school staff recommendation form. While applicants do not need to be enrolled at an IB school, the recommendation must come from a staff member at the student’s current secondary school. Preference is given to applicants whose recommenders demonstrate both support for the proposed project and confidence in the student’s capabilities. The application window for the 2026 cycle is open from January 12 to January 30, 2026 (closing at 23:59 CET). Late applications will not be accepted. The deadline for school sponsor letters is also January 30, 2026. Award announcements will be made on April 10, 2026. Grant funds will be released in May, with student programming beginning in June. Projects will wrap up in December 2026 following a reflection and budget review process in November. This recurring annual grant is part of the IB’s broader Festival of Hope initiative and continues to expand its network of young global citizens committed to meaningful change.
