Route 66 Grant Program
This funding opportunity provides financial support to certified convention and visitors bureaus in Illinois for enhancing and promoting the historic Route 66 tourism experience in preparation for its centennial celebration in 2026.
The Route 66 Grant Program, administered by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO), provides funding to certified convention and visitors bureaus (CVBs) for the development, promotion, and preservation of the Illinois portion of historic Route 66 in preparation for its centennial celebration in 2026. This grant program aims to elevate the Route 66 tourism experience through new attractions, infrastructure enhancements, marketing, education, and alignment with emerging trends in transportation. Originally established in 1926, Route 66 has become one of the most iconic highways in American history, symbolizing freedom, adventure, and mobility. The Illinois segment of Route 66 spans more than 300 miles from Chicago to the Chain of Rocks Bridge, offering a unique array of roadside attractions, historical landmarks, and cultural experiences. The Route 66 Grant Program is part of Illinoisโ broader strategy to revitalize and reimagine this corridor as a tourism destination, including considerations for electrified transportation and statewide promotions. Eligible applicants include convention and visitors bureaus certified by the Department pursuant to 20 ILCS 605/605-707. Each applicant may submit one application, with an exception for the CVB submitting the statewide promotional/marketing application on behalf of all Route 66 CVBs, who may submit one additional application for their local projects. All applicants must be registered and qualified in the GATA Grantee Portal and meet state and federal compliance standards including SAM.gov and UEI registration. The estimated total program funding is $4,000,000 with awards ranging from $20,000 to $1,000,000. A single statewide marketing application may request up to $700,000. The period of performance runs from grant execution through June 30, 2026. Pre-award costs dating back to July 1, 2025 are allowable. Matching funds are not required, and indirect costs are not allowed under this opportunity. Projects eligible for funding include capital improvements, construction, travel, equipment, consulting services, promotional activities, and infrastructure upgrades to accommodate electric vehicle tourism. Applications are open from September 15, 2025, through October 15, 2025, and must be submitted through the Smartsheet portal provided in the NOFO. A technical assistance session will be offered on September 23, 2025, though it is not mandatory. Evaluation of applications will follow a merit review process based on quality, capacity, and need. Final award announcements will follow completion of the review process, and all grantees will be subject to quarterly reporting, monitoring, and compliance with DCEOโs grant uniform requirements.
