Neighborhood Grants
This program provides funding to nonprofit organizations, public agencies, and volunteer-led groups in Rhode Island for community projects that strengthen neighborhood connections and enhance public spaces.
The Neighborhood Grants program, administered by the Rhode Island Foundation, supports community-building efforts that promote social cohesion and improve public life in neighborhoods across the state. Grants range from $1,000 to $10,000 and are awarded to projects that bring Rhode Islanders together in meaningful and impactful ways. The program underscores the Foundation’s commitment to equity, civic vitality, and cultural sustainability in local communities. Applications are due by 3:00 p.m. EST on September 26, 2025. Grant notifications will be sent to applicants in December 2025. Eligible applicants include nonprofit organizations, public agencies (such as libraries), and volunteer-led groups such as neighborhood or resident associations. Applicants without 501(c)(3) status may apply through a qualified fiscal sponsor. The program is designed to support projects that strengthen neighborhood ties, elevate shared public spaces, foster collaboration, and celebrate local traditions. Funded activities might include public art installations, neighborhood gatherings, improvements to green spaces, and projects that enhance accessibility and community engagement. Projects must be feasible within a 12-month period, have a lasting impact, and leverage community resources such as cash matches, in-kind contributions, or volunteer time. While new initiatives and enhancements to existing programs are eligible, the funding is intended for one-time costs rather than ongoing operational support. Projects that have previously received funding from the Foundation’s Community Grants program are deprioritized in this round. The grant program is partially supported by donor-advised and field-of-interest funds housed at the Foundation. Geographic or thematic fund requirements may influence funding decisions. The Foundation emphasizes support for efforts that promote equity and strengthen civic life across all communities in Rhode Island. Prospective applicants are encouraged to reach out to Donna Sowden, Grants & Community Investments Officer, with questions about eligibility or the application process. She can be reached at 401-427-4029.
