Interior Renovation Grant Program
This program provides financial assistance to for-profit businesses in Canton, Ohio, to support substantial interior renovations that enhance their commercial spaces and promote economic growth.
The City of Canton, Ohio, through its Department of Economic Development under the Office of the Mayor, is offering the Interior Renovation Program (IRP) as part of its 2026 Economic Development and Planning Grants. This initiative is designed to encourage reinvestment in local business properties by offering direct financial assistance to eligible for-profit businesses undertaking interior renovations. The IRP supports the city's broader goals of economic vibrancy, job creation, and commercial corridor revitalization. Applications open March 3, 2026, and will remain available until program funds are exhausted. Under the IRP, applicants may receive a 50% reimbursement grant up to $24,999 for comprehensive interior improvements to their business facilities. Qualifying work must be substantial in nature, addressing fixed assets and systems integral to the business space. Eligible expenses include lighting upgrades, HVAC and plumbing systems, ADA compliance improvements, interior demolition and reconstruction, painting and drywall, flooring, architectural and engineering costs, and other fixed asset enhancements that support code compliance and interior revitalization. Businesses applying must be operating legally in the City of Canton, have valid licenses and registrations, and be current with all city tax obligations. Properties must be used for commercial or retail purposes, and although vacant properties may be considered, they must be occupied to qualify for reimbursement. Applications submitted after construction has begun or been completed will not be accepted. Priority is given to for-profit businesses, especially those expanding or significantly enhancing their interior spaces. The application requires submission of detailed improvement plans, cost estimates from contractors, condition photographs, tax identification information, and a signed compliance certification. Applicants must complete and submit the official IRP application form to the Director of Economic Development at City Hall. The approval process involves internal review and confirmation by the Mayor’s Office. If approved, grantees will enter into an agreement with the city and receive reimbursement after successful completion and verification of the approved work. This program aligns with the city's broader strategy to improve neighborhood appearance and foster sustainable business growth. Alongside the IRP, the city is also offering additional programs in 2026 including the Storefront Reinvestment Program, Public Realm Reinvestment Program, and the Housing Development and Beautification Program. All programs reflect a commitment to revitalization through investment partnerships with local stakeholders.
