Farmers Market Organization Grant
This funding opportunity supports established farmers markets in a designated rural area, helping them enhance marketing, technology, education, and community engagement to strengthen local economies and foster community connections.
The Farmers Market Organization Grant is offered by Compeer Giving, a philanthropic initiative under Compeer Financial dedicated to investing in the vibrancy and development of rural communities. This grant opportunity supports farmers markets within a defined 144-county territory, focusing on promoting community cohesion and enhancing local agricultural economies. With a mission rooted in Compeer's broader vision of dynamic and thriving rural communities, the grant targets markets that serve as hubs of economic and social activity, helping them become community destinations and gathering spaces. The purpose of this grant is to strengthen farmers markets through targeted funding in four key areas: marketing, technology, education, and community engagement. Marketing support may include advertising, promotional materials, or consumer research studies. Technology enhancements could involve improvements to market websites or point-of-sale systems. Education funding is intended to provide learning opportunities for vendors or market staff. Community engagement projects can fund one-time visitor enhancements, such as entertainment or safety-related infrastructure, including seating and accessibility improvements. Eligibility for this grant is limited to established farmers markets that are open to the public, have posted hours of operation, and include at least three vendors offering locally-produced agricultural products. Markets must be located within the 144-county area served by Compeer Financial. The grant explicitly excludes funding for U-pick operations, roadside stands, CSAs, online markets, or storefront operations. Additionally, funds cannot be used to cover previously incurred deficits. Successful applicants must submit a valid W9 form and demonstrate how the grant will positively affect their local economy and community. The 2026 grant cycle opens on February 1 and closes on March 15. Selected recipients will be notified of their status six weeks following the deadline. All grant funds, which may total up to $1,000, must be spent during the current year’s market cycle, with final reporting due by October 1. Failure to submit required reporting may impact eligibility for future funding opportunities. Past recipients may apply again, but with a built-in cycle restriction; for example, recipients from 2025 may reapply in 2027. Applications are evaluated based on their alignment with Compeer Giving’s mission and the extent to which proposed activities support local economies and enhance community interaction. Strong applications will clearly articulate intended outcomes and show how the grant will be used effectively within one or more of the four designated categories.
