NIAID Resource-Related Research Projects (R24 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)
This funding opportunity supports the development of essential research resources for organizations working on allergy, immunology, and infectious diseases, benefiting the broader scientific community.
The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), a component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), invites applications for its Resource-Related Research Projects (R24). This funding opportunity, issued under FOA Number PAR-23-065, supports the development of research resources that significantly benefit existing high-priority projects within NIAID's mission areas. The purpose of this grant is to enhance coordination and support for current research and, in rare cases, to develop new resources that will serve the broader scientific community engaged in allergy, immunology, and infectious disease research. The NIAID is dedicated to conducting and supporting basic and applied research aimed at understanding, treating, and preventing infectious, immunologic, and allergic diseases. It sponsors comprehensive research efforts in the biology, pathogenesis, and host responses to infectious agents, including HIV. Additional focus areas include the mechanisms of normal immune function, immune dysfunctions such as autoimmunity and immunodeficiency, allergy and asthma, and transplant rejection. The institute also supports translational research aimed at developing vaccines, therapeutics, and diagnostic tools. The R24 grant mechanism supports non-hypothesis-driven activities that provide data, materials, tools, or services essential to advancing biomedical research. Funded resources must be of high quality, replenishable, and broadly accessible to qualified researchers, without duplicating existing commercial or other available resources. Appropriate use cases include unique non-clinical resources for the broader infectious disease research community, data and bioinformatics resources aligned with FAIR principles, and registries or reagents relevant to NIAID's scientific priorities. Eligible applicants include higher education institutions, nonprofits, for-profit organizations, small businesses, and various governmental entities including state, local, and tribal governments. Non-U.S. entities and components are not eligible to apply. Required registrations include SAM, NCAGE (if applicable), UEI, eRA Commons, and Grants.gov. Individual Program Directors or Principal Investigators must also have an eRA Commons account. Cost sharing is not required, and applications can be submitted for new, renewal, resubmission, or revision projects. Applicants may submit multiple scientifically distinct applications. Applications must adhere to submission guidelines in the SF424 (R&R) Application Guide and must include a detailed Research Strategy with sustainability plans and a Data Management and Sharing Plan. Letters of Intent are encouraged and should be submitted 30 days before the application due date. The next application cycles close on September 25, 2025, January 25, 2026, and future cycles follow the NIH standard due dates. The earliest opening date for applications was December 25, 2022, and the FOA will expire on January 8, 2026. Grants are not offered on a rolling basis but do recur with multiple application cycles each year. Funding amounts are not capped and should reflect the projectโs actual needs, with project periods of up to five years. NIAID anticipates awarding only one to two grants per year under this mechanism due to limited funds. Matching is not required. Evaluation criteria include the significance of the resource, qualifications of the investigators, innovation, feasibility of the approach, and sustainability of the resource. Additional considerations cover protections for human subjects, inclusion across diverse populations, animal welfare, and biohazards. Applications must also demonstrate strong institutional support and an environment conducive to the proposed work. Scientific/Research contacts are available for each NIAID division, and prospective applicants are strongly encouraged to consult with program staff at least ten weeks before submission to ensure alignment with NIAID priorities. For submission assistance, applicants may contact the eRA Service Desk, GrantsInfo, or Grants.gov Support. The designated peer review contact is Ann-Marie Brighenti, Ph.D., and the financial contact is Logan Baker.
