Grant Description

The 2026 Beginning Farmer Competitive Grant Program (BFCG) is a state-funded initiative administered by the New York Farm Viability Institute (NYFVI) in partnership with the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets. With a total of $1.7 million available, this program is designed to empower new farmers across New York State by supporting them in establishing or expanding their agricultural enterprises. The program seeks to promote the development of financially sustainable and independent commercial farm businesses run by beginning farmers who have operated for ten years or fewer. Eligible applicants must materially and substantially participate in the operation of a farm located in New York and must have ten years or less of farm operation experience. The BFCG is open to applicants who produce any type of agricultural product. For farms that generated under $1,000 in the previous year, a business plan is required to demonstrate feasibility and readiness. Applications will be accepted between March 16 and June 14, 2026. Awardees may choose from two funding tracks: Track 1 offers grants from $5,000 to $50,000 with an 18-month project period, while Track 2 offers awards between $50,001 and $200,000 for projects lasting up to 24 months. The program supports a range of eligible expenses including land acquisition, machinery, equipment, livestock, marketing efforts, infrastructure improvements, worker or apprenticeship training, and other needs tied to business viability and impact. Applicants must contribute a 5% financial match, which applies equally across both funding tiers. This match must be from the applicant’s own financial resources, and a calculator is provided to assist applicants in determining their required contribution. Applications will be evaluated on their potential to grow the applicant’s business and improve long-term sustainability. To assist applicants, the NYFVI provides access to producer grants resources and guidance on building a strong application. Additionally, scheduled virtual information sessions will take place on March 20, March 26, and April 7, 2026. These sessions are intended to help prospective applicants understand the grant structure and requirements. The program uses a structured Q&A process to ensure transparency and consistency. All questions must be submitted through a designated online form. Answers will be compiled and updated weekly on the NYFVI website to ensure equitable access to information for all applicants. The Beginning Farmer Competitive Grant Program represents New York’s strategic commitment to fostering a new generation of agricultural entrepreneurs. By reducing barriers to capital and supporting business growth, the initiative helps secure a more resilient and diversified future for farming across the state.
