The Paul Green Foundation Grant
This grant provides financial support to North Carolina-based nonprofit organizations for projects that promote dramatic arts, human rights, and literary excellence, reflecting the legacy of playwright Paul Green.
The Paul Green Foundation offers modest grants to nonprofit organizations in North Carolina to support dramatic productions, human rights initiatives, and literary projects. Established in 1982 to honor the life and work of playwright and human rights advocate Paul Green, the Foundation’s mission is to perpetuate his legacy through grantmaking that promotes his ideals and artistic vision. Paul Green was a Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright and social reformer who pioneered the genre of symphonic outdoor drama and used his literary works to advocate for racial equality, anti-war sentiment, and prison reform. The Foundation aims to fund projects that reflect Green’s values by supporting initiatives that uphold basic human rights, encourage dramatic arts—especially outdoor drama—and promote literary excellence. Proposals that combine these themes are particularly welcomed, especially where art is used in service of justice. Eligible applicants must be North Carolina-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations. Grants typically range from $500 to $2,500. Funding may support dramatic productions, literary preservation, or any program aligned with the Foundation’s focus areas. For example, eligible projects may include performances of Paul Green’s plays, literary publications inspired by his work, or community-driven art initiatives that advocate for human rights. The application deadline is October 1 each year, with award announcements made in November for use in the following calendar year. Initial submissions must include a one-page cover letter stating the project title, a brief description, and the grant amount requested. A tax ID letter (or that of a fiscal agent) is required. The proposal, limited to six pages, should cover project details, budget, timeline, and organizational leadership. Applications are accepted by email only and must be sent to the Grants Committee at paulgreenfdn@gmail.com. Finalists may be contacted for additional documentation. For more information or questions regarding submissions, applicants may contact the Foundation at 919-454-7429. Georgann Eubanks is the Executive Director.
