Grant Description

The Facility Matching Funds Program, administered by the Erie Sports Commission, was launched in 2018 to support the improvement and development of sports infrastructure within Erie County, Pennsylvania. As a division of VisitErie, the Commission’s goal is to enhance local sports facilities that contribute to increased tourism and economic impact through sporting events. Since the program's inception, over $240,000 has been allocated to local facilities, supporting initiatives that draw out-of-town participants and elevate Erie’s visibility as a regional sports destination. The program provides matching funds for projects that either attract new sporting events or grow existing ones, directly contributing to the local economy through sports tourism. For the 2026 funding cycle, a total of $75,000 is available, with individual funding requests considered up to $15,000. While requests exceeding this threshold may be reviewed, they are expected to be exceptional cases. All approved applications receive a dollar-for-dollar match, requiring applicants to secure equal cash funding independently. Eligible applicants must operate within Erie County and demonstrate the ability to host events that draw non-local visitors. Priority is given to applicants that are VisitErie partners in good standing and those who have not previously benefited from the program. Projects must be tourism-focused and lead to demonstrable economic benefits. Examples of fundable improvements include facility upgrades and the purchase of equipment that directly supports the expansion or enhancement of tourism-driven sports events. The application process requires submission of a project proposal demonstrating the intended use of funds and its anticipated tourism impact. All project expenses must be incurred after March 31 of the grant year, and projects must be fully completed by December 31. Proof of payment and performance (e.g., receipts, photos) is required for reimbursement, and the Erie Sports Commission will conduct a site visit to verify completion. Facilities awarded funding must collaborate with ESC on marketing efforts and agree to be promoted as venues for future events. Applicants are allowed to apply once per funding cycle. Any grant awarded to a for-profit entity may be considered taxable income, and recipients are responsible for any applicable tax obligations. Facilities requiring third-party approvals must secure them prior to submitting their application. The ESC oversees application review after the submission deadline, with decisions made based on project merit and alignment with program goals. Inquiries regarding the program or application issues should be directed to [email protected]. Additional information is available by contacting the Erie Sports Commission at (814) 454-1000 or by visiting their office at 208 East Bayfront Parkway, Suite 201, Erie, PA 16507.
