The Community Microgrant Program
This program provides funding for short-term, resident-led projects in Charlotte that promote community well-being, connection, and problem-solving, with a focus on equity and accessibility.
The Community Microgrant Program is a citywide initiative led by the City of Charlotte’s Housing & Neighborhood Services. It aims to fund short-term, resident-led projects that enhance well-being, connection, and neighborhood problem-solving. With a strong emphasis on equity and accessibility, the program offers low-barrier funding between $500 and $5,000, with no matching requirement. The grants are awarded for short-term efforts that can be implemented quickly but are expected to yield a lasting community impact. Applications are accepted annually on a rolling basis from October 1 through March 1. To be considered, applicants must apply at least eight weeks before their intended project start date. Each organization may only have one active Community Microgrant at a time and may receive no more than two grants per calendar year. Projects must be completed within six months of the grant agreement’s effective date. Eligible applicants include neighborhood-based organizations located within Charlotte city limits. These may include neighborhood associations, homeowners associations (HOAs), resident-led groups in rental communities, neighborhood and business associations, and neighborhood coalitions. All organizations must be active for at least six months before applying and meet specific registration and documentation criteria outlined in the program guidelines. Funding may be used for project-related materials, equipment rental or purchase, contractor fees, and up to 25% of the grant for food-related expenses, not to exceed $1,000. Prohibited uses include general operating costs, fundraising, political or religious activities, or entertainment. Applications are evaluated by an interdepartmental review team based on five criteria: community involvement, alignment with focus areas, organizational readiness, feasibility, and budget clarity. To apply, organizations must complete a required pre-application e-Learning Module and submit their proposal through the City of Charlotte’s online portal. Each application must include a project plan, itemized budget, relevant cost estimates, and community engagement documentation. The notification timeline is approximately four weeks from submission. Fund disbursement is processed on a reimbursement basis upon submission of receipts and documentation. The program emphasizes inclusivity and encourages broad resident participation. Projects must be new or significantly expanded initiatives that fall into one or more focus areas: Innovation & Sustainability, Community Health & Wellness, or Neighborhood Engagement & Belonging. Successful applicants must commit to completing a final report with documentation and reflections on project outcomes.
